The Ben Magec Federation will carry out a comprehensive plan for the regeneration of the Río Palmas-Ajuy ravine.
The Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands has commissioned a multidisciplinary team of the Ben Magec Federation – Ecologists in Action to develop a comprehensive regeneration plan for the Río Palmas-Ajuy ravine on the island of Fuerteventura.
The counselor responsible for the Area, José Antonio Valbuena, advances that "the objective is to know in detail the current state of the ravine and the situation of the vegetation, both in the channel and on its slopes, and based on that information develop a plan of actions with projects for its restoration thus attending to the demand of the residents of the municipality of Pájara, Betancuria and the island in general".
Today, the general director of the Fight against Climate Change, José Domingo Fernández, presented this initiative to the mayors of the municipalities of Betancuria and Pájara, Marcelino Cerdeña and Pedro Armas, in the ravine where it will act and where project technicians have also been present.
Fernández explains that "it is a comprehensive study based on a new approach to the treatment of ravine beds, which combines first-level technical knowledge with the most traditional, integrates future climate forecasts and applies agroecology and socioeconomics, in an environment of great environmental and cultural significance for the island of Fuerteventura such as the Betancuria basin. the fertile plain of Rio Palmas and Ajuy".
The initiative seeks to apply innovative solutions, based on nature, that add to the necessary sustainable and efficient use of the water that runs through the ravine, actions that benefit the infiltration and replacement of the insular aquifer.
Another highlight is the actions to prevent the loss of fertile soil of the ravine and desertification through the replacement of potential vegetation. It also includes the elaboration of consensual proposals for agricultural improvement through the review and enhancement of traditional agricultural structures.
Also noteworthy are the proposals for the conservation of the rich biodiversity of the ravine, with special relevance in the endemic palm groves of Phoenix canariensis of Río Palmas, Madre del Agua and Ajuy that give identity and reason to the Rural Park, the Special Area of Conservation (ZEC), the Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and the Biosphere Reserve.
And finally, proposals are contemplated to enhance the ecosystem functions of plant masses as carbon sinks and decarbonization of agricultural and / or tourism activities and the enhancement of geodiversity and paleodiversity.
