The hermitage of San Pedro de Alcántara, a historical and cultural jewel in La Ampuyenta.
On a tour of the most historic buildings on the island of Fuerteventura, the Hermitage of San Pedro de Alcántara, in La Ampuyenta, has more than 300 years of history. A monument declared as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Agreement of the Government of the Canary Islands of November 19, 1990.
A centenary building in La Ampuyenta
The information collected by the Government of the Canary Islands details that this hermitage was founded in 1681 by Don Pedro Medina and his wife Doña Agustina Vetancor. The belfry located on the wall of the gospel stands out, made of polychrome stonework in gray. The façade houses the main entrance with a semicircular arch on which a small oculus is located. The building is surrounded by a crenellated wall painted white.
Home of an important collection of works
Inside are kept an important set of paintings, both mural and easel. The first made in the second half of the eighteenth century and undeniable Rococo style, occupy the side walls and the arch of the main chapel, imitating columns, friezes, arches and sculptures. The paintings practically cover the walls of the temple with representations such as the Allegory to Salvation, painting of Animas or San Pedro levitando, among others.
Delimitation
It is defined by the following boundaries: to the north, with the north side of the barbican surrounding the enclosure; to the south, with the south side of the barbican surrounding the enclosure; to the source, with the east side of the barbican that surrounds the enclosure and to the west, with the west side of the barbican that surrounds the enclosure.
