Although everything indicates that there is no need to regret personal injuries, an accident occurred this morning in front of the beach of La Concha in Isla de Lobos. The passenger transport ship to the islet, El Majorero suffered an accident and ended up semi-sunk in the area.



Apparently it would have touched with a low in one of the panoramic vision windows in the starboard area that would have opened the waterway.



All tourists and staff would have been evacuated on another boat and in the first instance everything indicates that there is no personal injury to regret.

Fuel extracted from the crashed boat between Corralejo and Isla de Lobos.

Cabildo de Fuerteventura and City Council of La Oliva inform this morning in a statement sent to Radio Sintonía that, on the night of September 16 and early today, day 17, all the necessary tasks have been completed to extract the fuel and refloat the semi-sunken boat in Lobos and move it to a safer area.



The Minister of Security and Emergencies, Paloma Hernández, recognizes the great work and coordination of the different services and all the people who have been involved to avoid personal and environmental damage.

Hernández indicates that "with the work to extract the fuel, any possibility of spillage into the sea has been avoided and, from early this morning, a flight is made to verify that there is no type of stain or polluting spill, for greater peace of mind." The tasks have had the participation of Maritime Rescue and CECOES 1-1-2.

As will be remembered, the accident occurred when a tourist boat of 20 meters in length collided with the seabed on the southern coast of the Islet of Lobos. Last night the Cabildo activated the Insular Territorial Plan of Emergencies of Civil Protection of Fuerteventura (PEIN), in order to expedite all the necessary measures to refloat the boat and avoid any type of spill that could cause damage to the environment.

The president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García, and the Minister of Security and Emergencies, Paloma Hernández, have been present in the coordination and supervision of the tasks. They appreciate the rapid intervention of the personnel of the Emergency Services of both institutions to manage the situation.

For his part, the mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, who was present during the operations, appreciates the quick response by the Security and Emergency Service of the City of La Oliva and firefighters of the municipality who, in coordination with the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, executed all the necessary tasks for the sealing and extraction of fuel.

Likewise, they extend this recognition to all the volunteers, sailors and boats in the area who came immediately to cooperate in the tasks, "an intervention without which none of this would have been possible."

Cabildo de Fuerteventura and City Council of La Oliva have held a meeting with the Government of the Canary Islands this morning, Sunday 17 September, to address the situation in which the boat that suffered an accident this weekend in Islote de Lobos is currently located. Coordination is also carried out with the General State Administration through the Maritime Rescue and Safety Society (SASEMAR) and the Maritime Captaincy.



The accident occurred this Saturday, about 14:30 p.m., when a tourist boat of 20 meters in length collided with the seabed on the southern coast of the Islet of Lobos, in an area near the Playa de la Concha. All passengers were evacuated without suffering personal injury. In the early hours of today, Cabildo de Fuerteventura and La Oliva City Council completed the operations to refloat the boat and move it from the site of the accident, in the vicinity of La Concha Beach, to a safer area near the pier of the Islet of Lobos.



After these tasks, which had the cooperation of sailors and boats in the area, the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, and the mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, met this morning, by videoconference, with the Minister of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, Manuel Miranda, and the general director of Emergencies, Jose Brown. Also present were the Minister of Security and Emergencies, Paloma Hernández, the Minister of Environment, Carlos Rodríguez, and Security and Emergency personnel of the Cabildo.



During the meeting, the stability of the emergency situation was confirmed, after the total extraction of fuel from the tanks of the boat by the troops and volunteers who intervened and who allowed to avoid pollution to the sea by spillage.



Once the extraction of the fuel has been solved, work is currently being done to proceed with the towing of the boat by Maritime Rescue, from the area where it is currently located to the Corralejo dock, where Puertos Canarios has enabled a docking area.



Activation of the PEIN



This coordination is established within the framework of the Insular Territorial Plan of Civil Protection Emergencies of the Island of Fuerteventura (PEIN), the National Maritime Plan for response to pollution of the marine environment (PMN) and the Territorial Emergency Plan of Civil Protection of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA). All of them activated yesterday, September 16.

Cabildo de Fuerteventura and City Council of La Oliva have received this morning, the material they have required to be able to carry out the maneuver of transferring the injured boat from the dock of the Islet of Lobos to the Port of Corralejo. This material is provided by the Government of the Canary Islands and arrived in Fuerteventura through the helicopter of the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES).



The arrival of the material will allow greater buoyancy and safety to the ship during the transfer. With these safety elements already in Fuerteventura, the best possible moment will be waited to start the maneuver, taking into account the navigability conditions of the sea.

This transfer operation has been coordinated by Cabildo, La Oliva City Council, General State Administration and Government of the Canary Islands. The ship will be towed by Salvamento Marítimo, from an area near the pier of Lobos to the Port of Corralejo, where Puertos Canarios has enabled a docking area.

The operations for the return of the boat to Corralejo are coordinated, once the stability of the emergency situation has been rarified, after the work for its refloating and total extraction of fuel from the tanks of the boat by members of Cabildo and City Council of La Oliva, with the cooperation of Maritime Rescue and CECOES 1-1-2, as well as volunteers who came immediately in the face of the emergency situation.

The tourist boat that was injured in the Islet of Lobos last weekend has been successfully transferred to the Port of Corralejo, thanks to the coordination between Cabildo de Fuerteventura, La Oliva City Council, Government of the Canary Islands and the General State Administration through Maritime Rescue.



The transfer was carried out this morning, once the navigability conditions of the sea have allowed it to be executed as safely as possible, and thanks to the material provided by the Government of the Canary Islands, to provide the ship with greater buoyancy. Salvamento Marítimo was in charge of towing the boat to the dock of Corralejo, where Puertos Canarios had conditioned an area for its berthing, culminating the operation correctly around 10.30 am.



The president of the Cabildo, Lola García, and the Minister of Security and Emergencies, Paloma Hernández, appreciate the coordination that has existed between the different services for the return of the ship to Corralejo, as well as the efforts of the Cabildo and City Council of La Oliva to refloat the boat and extract all the fuel from its tanks, which has allowed to avoid spills into the sea. They extend their gratitude to all the volunteers, sailors and boats that collaborated in all these actions and in the evacuation of the passengers.



Once the emergency has been resolved, the Insular Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection of the Island of Fuerteventura (PEIN) will be deactivated.

Pre-alert deactivated due to risk of contamination after the refloat of El Majorero.

The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands ended, at 18:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19, the Pre-alert situation of the Territorial Emergency Plan of Civil Protection of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA) declared on September 16 due to the risk of marine pollution by a boat of 20 meters in length stranded on the southern coast of the Isla de Lobos due to a breakdown.



This vessel has been refloated, towed and docked, last afternoon, at the Corralejo Pier free of fuel and oil, so having disappeared the risk of marine pollution and being deactivated the National Maritime Plan for Coastal Pollution, the Government of the Canary Islands terminates the Pre-alert situation.

I was not directly involved but at the periphery.
I have to say after the initial ,understandable , panic the emergency plan kicked in quickly and efficiently.
The following day the salvage operation was very good.
