There’s no official cash withdrawal limit in Spain, but go over this threshold and the tax office may come knocking

Even in today’s world of contactless payments and Banking apps, plenty of people in Spain still use good old-fashioned cash. But if you’re regularly withdrawing large sums from ATMs, be warned: Spain’s tax authority, Hacienda, is watching.

While there’s no official cap on how much you can take out of your account, pulling more than €1,000 in a single operation could flag your activity to tax inspectors. And if you hit €3,000 or more, banks are legally required to report your transaction, potentially triggering a full investigation into where the Money came from — or what it’s being used for.

Large cash withdrawals in Spain draw tax authority attention

It’s a common myth in Spain that there’s a legal limit on how much cash you can withdraw. In reality, you’re free to take out whatever’s in your account, as long as the bank has enough physical cash available. But when your withdrawals start getting big, you may find yourself on Hacienda’s radar.

According to the Bank of Spain, banks must report any cash operation — withdrawal or deposit — of €1,000 or more. And for transactions of €3,000 or above, especially those involving €500 notes, a red flag is automatically raised and details are passed to the tax authorities.

This doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong — but if you can’t explain where the cash came from (or what it’s for), you could be facing some uncomfortable questions.

To stay on the safe side, banks often recommend you speak directly to a staff member and get a written record when handling large sums. That way, if an audit comes up later, you’ll have proof of the transaction’s legitimacy.
Why Spain’s tax agency monitors large ATM withdrawals

The answer’s simple: cash is harder to trace. Unlike card payments or online transfers, large amounts of physical Money can slip under the radar — making it a favourite tool for tax evasion, Money laundering and under-the-table payments.

That’s why Hacienda has been tightening its grip on high-cash transactions in recent years. Even if you’re using the cash for perfectly legal reasons, such as paying a tradesperson or giving a loan to a family member, you might still get caught up in an automated red flag system.

Banks also have their own security measures in place. Most ATMs have a daily withdrawal cap of €600, which helps prevent theft and fraud. If you need more, you can request a temporary limit increase from your bank — but again, that request may be logged and monitored.

And if you’re wondering how much cash you can legally carry on you in Spain, the law sets the upper limit at €100,000. Above that, the Police can step in and demand proof of the Money’s origin.
Keeping cash at home? There’s no legal limit – but keep the receipts

If you’d rather keep your savings under your mattress than in the bank, there’s no law stopping you — but if you’re ever asked to explain your finances (in an audit or Police check, for example), you’ll need to prove where that cash came from.

CaixaBank, one of Spain’s largest banks, confirms this in its client advice blog: “There is no legal limit on how much cash you can store at home, as long as you can demonstrate its origin if required.”

So, should you stop using cash altogether? Not necessarily. But if you’re taking out €1,000 or more in one go, prepare for scrutiny. And if you hit €3,000 or above, make sure you’ve got a paper trail — because Hacienda definitely will.

Specifically, a series of modifications and changes have been carried out in this Ordinance Regulating the Value Tax on Urban Land (capital gains), which will introduce tax credits and reductions in certain scenarios, depending on the cadastral value of the land, giving special importance to vulnerable population groups, taking into account the different cadastral sections.

Therefore, the modifications made to the ordinance reflect the intention of the municipal institution to seek to prioritize in an equitable way the distribution of wealth, protecting neighbors who have a situation of fragility, wanting to apply the greatest possible bonus to the transmissions of habitual homes with 80% and 95% to those inheritances of habitual homes in favor of descendants or adopted persons, ascendants or adoptive parents or spouses who are in a vulnerable situation such as: pensioners, unemployed, people with disabilities, victims of gender violence or under 30 years of age.

The mayor of the capital, Juan Jiménez, stressed that "with this measure we come to adapt and take into account the different situations that people have, during these transmission processes, taking them into account is social justice and more in the inflationary era in which we are immersed.
Hi All,

Have all three of the above. Never used either of the first two at Spanish ATMs.

What is the cheapest way of getting cash from these options (ie excluding Spanish banks) ? Obviously the first two require a € balance whereas the last one does the MasterCard conversion over to £. But ignoring that, which card and which ATM charges the least ? Is Banca March still going in Corralejo or Caleta and is that still free ? It certainly used to be for Halifax Clarity a couple of years back....

I’m not fully up to speed with current ATM charges so many thanks for any info.
Just wondering, does anyone get a private pension from the UK paid directly into their Spanish bank account and if so, what exchange rate is used (good/bad/indifferent) and do you get charged for this service?
I've enquired with one pension scheme - they use current 'bank exchange rate' and want to charge £20 for each transfer. This would leave me much worse off than receiving the Money into UK account and transferring via Wise.

First question on the Forum so my apologies if this has been asked before, but I genuinely can't see a recent thread. We are moving to Lajares and want to sign up with a bank in Corralejo. People seem to recommend Sabadell for their online Banking and general friendliness. Would that be a good call? And also - which type of account have people got experience of? It will be for UK pensions in, and general admin expenses and occasional use of ATMs.
TIA.

BBVA are offering free Banking accounts to residents and non-resdents. It is all online. It is very simple to switch over, you need your TIE or passport and a full face picture to upload when you complete the online application form. The last stage of the application is a videocall to the bank, where you are asked to show the TIE or passport and your own face. If they need any documents, it says they send a courier to collect them (but we were not asked for any).

BBVA will manage the switch for you, transferring any direct debits or regular credits and closing your present account, if you want to close it. You get a debit card, two if a joint account. The date is agreed with you fir the switch, usually 4 to 6 weeks time, so they can notify all your regular payees.

We were paying €160 (€40 per quarter) to Sabadell and Caxia charge €140 a year!

I've been wanting to move banks for ages, but the thought of contacting electricity, water, telephone suppliers plus the council to do new direct debits put me off.

I'm not on commission despite the fact that as an existing customer there are rewards for referrals!

We did all the online stuff in under an hour and our new account goes live in about a month.

Good luck.
