Fuerteventura wants to be the breadbasket of the Canary Islands again.

Cabildo de Fuerteventura and SEIASA advance in the materialization of one of the largest irrigation plans in the Canary Islands

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, has held today, September 13, a meeting with the board of the State Mercantile Society of Agricultural Infrastructures (SEIASA) with the aim of materializing the Project of modernization and improvement of irrigation in the center-south of the Island.

This project will be carried out through an agreement already signed between the Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium (CAAF) and the state company SEIASA, with an estimated investment of more than 13.2 million euros charged to the funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain.

For the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, "it is essential to advance the work that allows us to have an unprecedented irrigation plan, very necessary to maintain the competitiveness of the primary sector of Fuerteventura".

According to the Minister of Water, Adargoma Hernández, "promoting agricultural water is an absolute priority, since it will allow to consolidate and strengthen the primary sector. This irrigation modernization plan will also join the rest of the infrastructures that are contemplated in the third cycle of the Hydrological Plan of Fuerteventura to bring irrigation water to the entire island territory.

The meeting was attended by the president of SEIASA, Francisco Rodríguez, its technical director, Víctor Morales, and the head of Relations with the Irrigation Communities, Victoria Fernández-Salinero.

On behalf of the Cabildo, the Minister of Finance and Economic Promotion, Nuria Cabrera, manager of the CAAF and technical staff of the area of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries were present.

This plan to modernize and improve irrigation arises in response to the need to maintain the competitiveness of the sector on the island. The actions contemplated in the project are expected to directly benefit 289 people who cultivate 152 hectares.

The planned works consist of the execution of a new desalination module in the Gran Tarajal WWTP and an annexed pond. In addition, through a pumping station, water will be driven to a reservoir in Mazacote and to the Tesjegerague reservoir, also newly built.

The irrigation networks will be equipped with digitized systems, and an energy improvement will be achieved, through the use of renewable energies with the construction of a photovoltaic plant that feeds the infrastructures.

The investment is part of the 'Plan to Improve the Efficiency and Sustainability of Irrigation' of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and will have Next Generation funds from the European Union.
