The Cabildo wants to give future to the Cañada del Rio wind farm.
"The machinery has become obsolete after 28 years of operation and out of market from the technical point of view"
The company Eólicas de Fuerteventura is focused on giving a future to the Cañada de la Barca wind farm, an installation considered a pioneer at national and European level in the commitment to the water-energy binomial for the production of quality water through wind energy. The machinery of the wind farm has become obsolete after 28 years of operation and out of market from the technical point of view. Therefore, the Board of Directors and the Board of Directors seek to give continuity to its useful life to take advantage of existing infrastructures.
Eólicas de Fuerteventura is an economic interest grouping constituted by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and Enel Green Power España SL (EGPE). According to its administrators, the viability of the facilities could go through their modernization, the reduction of the number of wind turbines and the introduction of others of greater power and energy efficiency.
For the president of the Cabildo, Sergio Lloret López, the objective is to seek maximum optimization and efficiency to facilities that have been pioneers in the implementation of renewables in Fuerteventura.
According to the Minister of Water of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, David de Vera, "it is necessary to seek the continuity of useful life of the facilities and for this we are working on seeing the viability of the repowering of the park and the use of associated machinery".
For his part, Manuel Ortega, head of Enel Green Power in the Canary Islands, explains that "this project will constitute a substantial technological improvement in an emblematic wind farm for the island of Fuerteventura and, in addition, significantly increases energy production".
The Fuerteventura Water Supply Consortium made this wind energy infrastructure a reality in 1994. The Cañada de la Barca park has contributed in recent years to the maintenance of the price of water.
Eólicas de Fuerteventura is an Economic Interest Group, constituted by the Consorcio de Abastecimiento de Aguas a Fuerteventura (CAAF), with 60% ownership, and Enel Green Power España SL, of the Endesa group, which owns the remaining 40%.
