As I started this thread, I thought it only right to add a personal conclusion! Fourteen months after submitting my request to become zero rated for UK tax, and for a refund of all UK tax paid from start 2019, I received a very healthy cheque in the post for HMRC. I’ve not received the separately sent calculations yet, but it looks about right to me. When my private pension arrived in my bank account, however, it had still been taxed, so I used my Gateway access to go into my HMRC status and records. Sure enough, my tax code remained unchanged despite the refund of three and a half years’ tax.

I telephoned HMRC, and got straight through to a very polite and helpful handler, third ring. He agreed that I had done all I could, submitted all the right documents and info, and that there seemed to be an omission at their end. He put me through to a technician - a minute on hold - who agreed that the final step had not been completed, an oversight. All will now be sorted, he assured me. Hopefully that’s it, just thought I’d set this down to encourage anyone to persevere, and that HMRC, in my experience, have been genuinely knowledgeable and keen to help!

Many thanks for all the info, I also have tax sitting with HMRC so I have submitted my DT Spain individual form plus my certificate 'Residencia Fiscal en Convenio' and hoping that I can have the same outcome, fingers crossed.

Hooray! Had 2 letters from HMRC today, each saying I had overpaid in different previous years! (I had overpaid??) A 3rd letter said they will send a refund cheque within 14 days (I had asked for refund to my UK bank account!). A 4th letter, yep, a 4th, stated I am now not required to pay UK tax.

So, I'm very happy but incredulous at their inefficiency. I think I will lodge a complaint ....

I sent them my original application and then sent a further 6 communications before it got resolved.  Cry No apology amongst my 4 letters today.
