Destruction in the Dunes: An influencer hides 1,000 euros and his followers come with shovels and sacks.

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria investigates what happened this Saturday to file a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office

The challenges of influencers, sometimes, go too far in order to get a handful of likes and followers. Regardless of where, some are able to carry them out, even in protected places. That is what happened this Saturday in the Dunes of Maspalomas, where a person hid 1,000 euros under the sand of the Special Nature Reserve and his followers came en masse with sacks and shovels to locate them, explains the digital TIEMPO DE CANARIAS.

The images have gone viral on social networks, accompanied by multiple complaints about the destruction that was taking place in this place in the south of Gran Canaria. The objective was clear: to locate the thousand euros that were hidden in order to keep them. To do this, they did not hesitate to dig holes in the sand, regardless of the natural impact that this could cause.

Faced with this situation, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria has already announced that it has sent environmental agents to the area to investigate what happened and, subsequently, prepare a complaint that they will present to the Prosecutor's Office. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that attacks like this have occurred in the Nature Reserve. Already in summer, a large group of tourists could be seen even passing through areas where walking is forbidden for the sake of preserving nature.

With all this, the Cabildo itself, through the Ministry of the Environment, interposed between January and July 2023 a total of 120 fines for transiting and even camping in places not permitted. Many of them led to fines of 150 euros, but others of up to 400 euros have also been carried out against production companies that did not respect the conditions of the permits that were provided to take images inside.

600 euros fine for the meeting to search for 1000 euros in the dunes of Maspalomas

The penalties for situations of this kind are laughable in the protected areas of the islands

The derisory sanction that the Cabildo de Gran Canaria will impose on the youtubers who orchestrated and promoted a viral challenge on social networks outrages citizens even more. This is a maximum of €600 for the challenge that included a €1,000 'treasure' hunt and tickets to a music festival, supposedly buried in the sand of the Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve.

The island corporation opened an investigation on Sunday to assess whether there had been an environmental aggression and, therefore, a crime against the environment in this protected area in the south of Gran Canaria. However, this viral challenge summoned a crowd of people, who came "with shovels and sacks" — hoes — in one of the areas where free transit is authorized. In addition, the agents of the island's Ministry of the Environment found that there was no effect on the flora or fauna of the site.

The administrative sanction of 600 euros will be applied by the Cabildo against the promoters of this advertising campaign of the DN7 Music Festival Vol. 3 event, because they organized an event in the Special Nature Reserve without having requested the prior authorization required for the realization of any type of private activity in the area.

The regulations for the use and management of the reserve establish fines with amounts ranging between 150 and 600 euros, and the Cabildo will apply "the maximum allowed by the regulations", according to the Minister of the Environment, Raúl García Brink, in statements collected by La Provincia.

Farcical approach by the Canarian authorities, the organisers of this event should have been made an example of.
