Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points in Fuerteventura
#21
Noticias:

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Crafts directed by Domingo Pérez, is working these days to complete the projects to expand the network of recharging points for electric vehicles enabled by the island geography. In total, work is being done on the creation of 18 new electric couplings.

The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret, has declared, "from the Cabildo we continue to bet on sustainability and the implementation of alternative energies on our island, always respectful of the environment and the population".

The Ministry foresees in La Lajita, Pájara and Tuineje the installation of a fast recharging point in each of these enclaves; the remaining 15 points will be medium or slow loading. In Puerto del Rosario, three new public access points are planned, which will be located in the city. In the municipality of Antigua there will be two new hooks: one in Caleta de Fuste and another in the town of Antigua itself, near the Town Hall. In La Oliva there will be three points: Lajares, Corralejo and in the town of La Oliva, also in the surroundings of the City Hall. Pájara will have two new charging points: one in Costa Calma and another in Morro Jable. In Gran Tarajal, in the municipality of Tuineje, two new hooks will be enabled, while in Betancuria two other points will be created: in Valle de Santa Inés and in Vega de Río Palmas.

"With most of the municipalities we have quite advanced procedures," explains Domingo Pérez, who points out that "in most cases they have already given us the land in addition to signing the corresponding cooperation agreements." With respect to those that still remain to be initialed, "they will be signed shortly, at the turn of the summer." Once all the assignments have been formalized and the cooperation agreements signed, the Ministry will begin work on the installation of the recharging points, whose forecasts are that they will be completed in a maximum period of two months.

One of the objectives set by the Ministry of Industry in energy matters is to encourage the acquisition of electric vehicles on the island, which is why work has been done to strengthen the network of recharging points from north to south. "When I arrived at the Ministry," recalls Domingo Pérez, "there were only six charging points on the island. Now there are eight, to which will be added shortly these 18 new points, which will be in operation before the end of the legislature."

The new hooks not only represent a quantitative leap, but also make Fuerteventura the island of the archipelago with the best public access network in the Canary Islands and one of the best in Spain, since the owners of electric vehicles will be able to have recharging points every 25 kilometers or less.

"In Fuerteventura there is an increasing presence of vehicles, the result of citizen awareness. From the Cabildo of Fuerteventura we will always be supporting each and every one of the policies that allow reducing CO2 emissions and energy savings, "says the counselor. In this line is the Insular Plan for energy saving and the implementation of renewable energies, promoted by the Ministry of Industry of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. One of its lines of subsidies is the aid for the acquisition of pure electric vehicles. In the call corresponding to this year, 19 applications were submitted that have been granted and that are currently in the process of being granted. "These are grants that are added to those granted by other administrations and that allow us all to reduce the carbon footprint in Fuerteventura and on the planet," concludes Pérez.

Electric cars pollute more than combustion cars in the Canary Islands according to a study.

Charging an electric car in the Canary Islands entails higher CO2 emissions than those generated by a traditional combustion vehicle because the isolated electrical system of the archipelago and its energy mix uses even more polluting fuels, says the Diario de Avisos. The lack of implementation of renewables means that the electric charge of these cars is made from a network that is fed by fossil fuels.

It is one of the main conclusions that emerge from the study carried out by three researchers from the Department of Electronics, Engineering and Automotive of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and published in the journal "Journal of Cleaner Production" under the title "A comparative evaluation of CO2 emissions between internal combustion and electric vehicles in small electrical systems isolated from power – Case study of the Canary Islands".

Thus, the research observes differences between CO2 emissions related to electric and combustion vehicles in the electric power systems of islands with higher energy consumption, and only observes a small decrease in CO2 emissions on islands with better or more substantial energy storage systems and high levels of renewable penetration.

After calculating the emissions per kilometer traveled by passenger cars, it was observed that the emissions of electric vehicles vary between islands and even double the emissions that this type of vehicle makes in the peninsula.

"The process of charging the batteries of electric cars on the islands is carried out through a mix of electricity generation with an important contribution of fossil fuels and shocking emissions," explain Nuez, Ruiz-García and Osorio, drivers of the study.

On the island with more penetration of renewables and energy storage systems, El Hierro, it is clarified that less CO2 is emitted with electric than with combustion and that the life cycles of energy storage "play an important role and condition any reduction in future emissions".

Specifically, in El Hierro, where renewables account for 51.6% of the mix, CO2 emissions caused by electric vehicles are 12.6% lower than those generated by traditional vehicles.

Thus, the three researchers recommend that, in order to achieve the objective that electric cars contribute to reducing carbon emissions, it is necessary to increase "significantly" the penetration of renewables in the energy mix.

They also propose that the needs of having electric energy storage options must be properly sized to obtain a true decrease in CO2 emissions during the generation of electricity in island systems.

The study also calls for replacing conventional generators with newer, more efficient and less polluting ones and replacing fuel oil and diesel during electricity generation with other less polluting fuels such as natural gas.

The incorporation of electric vehicles as active elements to achieve this, the researchers conclude, can also be accentuated if the hours of adequate charging are selected.

Puerto del Rosario has three new charging points for electric cars.

The City Council of Puerto del Rosario, through the Department of Industry directed by Juan Manuel Verdugo, installs three new charging points for electric cars and new identification totems in each of the industrial estates of the municipality: Risco Prieto, La Hondura and El Matorral.

Improve economic activity and fast charging points and public knowledge
These totems are assigned a double function: on the one hand, they identify, through a map and directory, each and every one of the companies located in the industrial areas and, on the other, they indicate the new charging points for electric vehicles of fast charge and public use, installed by the City Council, which will come into operation in the coming days.

The capital has three industrial estates: Risco Prieto, La Hondura and El Matorral, adding between the three areas, more than 600,000 m2 of surface, where the role of the Associations of Entrepreneurs of each industrial estate is crucial as an active and unifying part of efforts.

The new action joins several already carried out and those that are underway in order to stimulate economic activity in these areas in which 150 companies are located. There are 54 actions with which to improve public services in these areas of such importance for the productive fabric of Puerto del Rosario.

These improvement actions include the reduction of garbage on public roads, waste management for all polygons, as well as the implementation of new collection points and cleaning beatings in all areas, which are the main points of the plan, and has also acted in cleaning and disinfection, as well as the improvement of the pavement, sidewalks and signage, undertaken by the City Council itself.

On the other hand, actions are also contemplated in green areas and urban furniture, focusing on the improvement and conditioning of recreational areas that total more than 30,000 square meters of parks, flowerbeds and gardens, as well as the installation of new canopies and new electro-welded mesh panels to delimit surfaces and avoid possible accidents.

The Department of Industry of the City Council of Puerto del Rosario thanks and supports these newly created Associations, and especially their presidents, who have shown the willingness to work in a coordinated manner in such necessary and important improvements.
