Embraer developing hybrid electric aircraft
#1
Noticias:

Embraer makes the leap with the prototypes of its new hybrid electric regional aircraft.

The first aircraft with these characteristics could be tested in the Canary Islands since they are short journeys and smaller aircraft.
Aviation begins to consider the leap to a new type of aircraft that are not so dependent on fossil fuels, and in this sense the first images of Embraer of its hybrid-electric technology aircraft appear, without neglecting hydrogenic electric aircraft.

In this sense, these new hybrid-electric technologies, if viable, will first have an implementation in small and short-range aircraft, where they are more viable, and then scale up to larger aircraft.

Following this logic, Embraer embarks on the development of aircraft of the environment of 19-30 passengers. Nor is it surprising that, in addition to hybrid-electric, it focuses on hydrogen, thus adding to Airbus' recent announcement of its commitment to hydrogen. What may surprise is the early feasibility date announced in the press release: 2030, although this is for the variant used by SAF. And 2035 for hydrogen.
Energia Hybrid (E19-HE and E30-HE): Revealed as nine seats in 2021, Embraer is exploring a 19- and 30-seater variant:

parallel hybrid-electric propulsion (SAF or kerosene + electric)

up to 90% reduction in CO2 emissions when using SAF, 30% with Jet A1

19- and 30-seat variants

Rear-mounted motors

Technology readiness: early 2030s
Energia H2 fuel cell (E19-H2FC and E30-H2FC): Introduced as 19-seater in 2021, Embraer is exploring a 30-seater variant:
Electric hydrogen propulsion

zero CO2 emissions

19- and 30-seat variants

Rear-mounted electric motors

Technology readiness – 2035

While still in the evaluation phase, architectures and technologies are being evaluated for technical and commercial feasibility. The Energy Advisory Group has also been launched to leverage input and collaboration from partner airlines.

Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, said: "We have set bold but realistic goals to bring these concepts to market. Since we announced our Energy concepts last year, we have been busy evaluating different architectures and propulsion systems. These efforts have resulted in the updates to our concepts that we share with you today. Several airlines are part of our Energy Advisory Group, the experience and knowledge they bring to the study will be key to accelerating to the next phases."

Since new propulsion technologies will be applied for the first time in smaller aircraft, Embraer is in a unique position. Seats 19 and 30 are sensitive starting points for focused studies, as they are likely to present earlier technical and economic preparation.

While the challenges of net zero are significant, in less than 25 years our commercial aircraft have already reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by almost 50% per seat/mile, using only conventional fuels and propulsion. "Zero is a goal we can achieve," says Embraer.
