Radio Sintonia:
The Civil Guard seizes more than 30 exotic and invasive birds in Fuerteventura.
The Nature Protection Service of the island of Fuerteventura (SEPRONA) within the framework of operation ECLECTUS, investigates two people for the crime of possession and trafficking of protected species and a crime of documentary falsification, for the apprehension of more than 30 specimens, of which 18 of them are classified as invasive species and 20 as exotic birds being these contemplated in the Convention on International Trade in Threatened Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Knowledge of the facts
The Civil Guard became aware following a complaint received in the premises of the SEPRONA of Fuerteventura by a citizen that a breeder of psittacidas (Macaws, parrots and parrots) of Fuerteventura is dedicated to bring psittacidas included in the CITES of Annexes I and II from Portugal without any legal documentation, nor export authorization by the CITES National Authority of the country of origin and MITECO (Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge) in Spain.
Given the facts denounced by the citizen, the Civil Guard initiates the investigation by carrying out the appropriate investigative measures to be able to clarify the criminal acts, surveillance of the place where the birds are, as well as the investigations and inquiries appropriate for the location of the alleged authors, and the Police technical inspections of the place, thus being able to collect all the Police investigations to identify the authors of the facts.
Entry and registration
For all this, the Civil Guard on May 28, 2022 carries out the entry and subsequent registration in the facilities where the exotic and invasive birds were found in the town of Tuineje, verifying that there were a total of 222 live animals, of which many of them are contemplated by CITES.
In addition, the facilities used as a poultry farm presented documentary irregularities required by law, such as not accrediting a veterinary control of the facilities, the authorization of the Zoological Nucleus does not conform to the memory of the facilities and lacks the respective license of the activity and construction of the facilities.
Among the species seized are two Eclectus roratus (Parrot eclecto), one Amazon Aestiva (Blue-fronted Amazon), three Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae (Kakariki), two Eos Rubra (Borneo Lorises), two Ara Ararauna (Blue-yellow Macaw), two Diopsitaca Nobilis (Noble Macaw), two Trichoglossus Molucano (Rainbow Parrot), Polytelis Alexandrae (Princess of Wales), two Pyrrhura Molinae (Green-cheeked Parakeet), two Pionus Menstruus (Blue-headed Parrot), Pionites melanocephalus (White-breasted Parakeet).
Therefore, the Civil Guard proceeds to the apprehension and transfer to an authorized place, being for this occasion the Oasis Wildlife Zoo located in the municipality of Pájara.
In addition to the apprehension and transfer of the birds, in the hatchery are located two cesspools of wastewater and without authorization, one of them being open and giving off a strong fecal odor, a circumstance that could affect the hygienic-sanitary conditions of the birds, with the presence of a large number of mosquitoes around the aforementioned cesspool, processing the appropriate complaints for the administrative infractions committed.
The proceedings have been made available to the Guard Court of Puerto del Rosario.
From the Civil Guard it is recalled that invasive alien species (IAS) are one of the main causes of biodiversity loss in the world. Law 42/2007, of December 13, on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, defines an ERA as "one that is introduced or established in a natural or semi-natural ecosystem or habitat and that is an agent of change and threat to native biological diversity, either due to its invasive behavior, or due to the risk of genetic contamination".
