Just a reminder that on the 1st January 2026 it will become mandatory for all vehicles to carry the new V-16 Emergency Light (a beacon that is placed on top of the car and flashes if you have broken down. The new model contains a SIM card and can alert the transport authorities to your location.

They are available in many places but prices have increased as the deadline draws near. Currently around 40 euros.

Guardia Civil tell DGT the V16 beacon plan is unsafe – Call for changes in rules before January 1

Placing V16 to indicate emergency
Placing V16 to indicate emergency Credit: DGT

Spain’s Directorate General for Traffic (DGT) is set to make connected V16 emergency beacons the sole required warning device for vehicle breakdowns or accidents starting January 1 and so phase out the traditional emergency triangles entirely (until now required by Spanish law).

However, the decision has caused serious concern with a major Civil Guard association, who label the standalone use of the V16 as a “danger” due to potential visibility issues, and are now calling on the DGT to change the rules about what to do in the case of a breakdown.
