Oasis Park - Zoo Fuerteventura
#21
From Diario:

Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura changes from next January 17 its Calendar of visits, opening from Wednesday to Sunday from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Oasis Wildlife continues to offer, at this time, a new alternative of leisure with cause, in which the neighbors and visitors of Fuerteventura will be able to live new experiences with nature and get to know the animals from another perspective, through educational and didactic workshops.

Oasis is the only center for the rescue and recovery of flora and fauna of Fuerteventura, which has educational and awareness activities about the dangers faced by the main species of flora and fauna of our planet, and about the need to work together in their protection.
Visitors can meet, in the different experiences, endangered species such as the Canarian camel, giraffes or the African elephant, and tour with the help of botanical experts the largest cactus garden in Europe.
"We are making an important effort maintaining these days of opening and reinforcing our commitment to leisure with a cause in Fuerteventura with new activities and experiences, despite the crisis situation that we are still experiencing in the tourism sector. We maintain our daily work of feeding and welfare of the animals that live in the center, but we will open to the public five days a week, "said Guacimara Cabrera, manager of the center.
"We want this leisure experience of nature and education in the care of the environment, to be one of the main experiences of tourists who come to our island," added Cabrera.
Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura faced the first closure to the public in March 2020, on the occasion of the first wave of the pandemic. After its opening, in August, it was also forced to reduce the days of visit, as well as the number of passes of its daily activities, but maintained, as it will do again now, its commitment to tourism and employment in Fuerteventura.
Despite the pandemic, Oasis Wildlife has maintained its daily work of caring for the species of its flora and fauna, with a great effort on the part of its management team and Zoo workers, and has remained open to the public despite the fall in tourism on the island. Currently a large team of people works to maintain the daily activity of the Zoo, which offers one million square meters outdoors.
Oasis Wildlife has active part of its interaction experiences and educational exhibits, with which visitors can continue to enjoy a day of learning and fun in nature.

During the tour, visitors can learn about the peculiarities of the Canarian camel, an autochthonous breed that is threatened, such as its feeding, its care or its conservation processes.

In addition, through experiences such as the Giraffe Experience and Elephant Experience, visitors can learn how these large mammals sleep or feed or the dangers they face in the wild.
From the hand of their caregivers they will learn their daily care processes in the rescue and recovery center of species, as well as what to do to favor their conservation.
In Botanic Expereince botanical experts address, along a tour of the didactic paths of the Botanical Garden, the exciting work carried out in the reproduction and care of native species and future plans, in collaboration with international conservation organizations and other botanical gardens, for their protection.

Training at Animal Welfare Camps at Oasis Wildlife.

The Director General of Livestock of the Government of the Canary Islands has made a visit to learn first-hand about the evolution of these live educational programmes

The professional training camps in animal welfare and livestock farming, organized by Oasis Wildlife and MasterD, represent a pioneering and unique educational avant-garde unprecedented in Europe. This week, in Fuerteventura, the third edition of the Animal Keeper Camp and the first of the Agro Camp are held, marking the beginning of a new era in training.

Andrés Díaz Matoso, Director General of Livestock of the Government of the Canary Islands, has visited Oasis Wildlife, the nerve centre of the professional camps, with the aim of learning about the evolution of the educational programmes developed there. This event marks a turning point in the way students are currently approaching the study and understanding of wildlife, agriculture, and environmental conservation.

From February 20 to 26, more than 55 students from Spain and various Latin American countries are being trained under the tutelage of Oasis Wildlife professionals and professors from the veterinary school. The professional camps offered to the students of the MasterD School of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture and Livestock represent a crucial phase in their training, especially in the final stage of their education. At this point, the transition from theory to practice becomes critical to their professional development. During these camps, students participate in an intensive coexistence modality, where they dedicate the entire day to participating in both practical and theoretical training activities. These activities are guided by experts specialized in relevant areas such as veterinary, agriculture, livestock and the environment. The structure of the professional camp gives them the opportunity to interact directly with professionals from different sectors, which enriches their understanding and allows them to apply their knowledge in real situations.

It is important to highlight that the program offered in collaboration with Oasis Wildlife and MasterD is theoretical-practical and is carried out in situ. However, external outings are also organized in cooperation with other entrepreneurship models and companies in the primary sector on the island of Fuerteventura. Collaborations with companies such as Vidaloe Fuerteventura and Huerta de Ángel, among others, stand out, providing students with a broader perspective and practical experiences in the field that complement their training in a comprehensive way.

"This program has become one of the greatest exponents for MasterD in our eagerness to train the best professionals in the field of animal care and agriculture. Not only is this a unique training action in Europe, but the quality of the experience that students live in Fuerteventura is a source of pride for all of us who are part of MasterD", concluded Blanca Lahoz, director of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the School of Agriculture, Livestock and Environment of MasterD.

Training Actions

The training actions offered cover a wide range of fields in the agricultural sector, such as fruit cultivation, specialization in certain species, intensive livestock farming practices compatible with the environment, product development, irrigation and fertilization systems, integration of technology in the sector, ecological soil management, among others.

However, if we focus on the zoological core, the areas of study include a variety of fundamental topics such as management, animal welfare, food safety, volunteer veterinary training, species recovery and rescue program, rehabilitation of abused animals, facility design, conservation projects, species management in reintroduction programs, and the management and training of endangered species. for reintroduction into the wild. Aspects related to safety and hygiene, the design of diets and the preparation of different departments are also addressed, such as areas for large mammals, primates, birds of prey, reptiles, among many others. It is worth remembering that Oasis Wildlife is the only nature rescue center in Fuerteventura.

Support from the General Directorate of Livestock of the Government of the Canary Islands

During the visit, the Director General of Livestock of the Canary Islands Executive, Andrés Díaz Matoso, highlighted the importance of training in the agricultural field to promote the incorporation of young people into the sector and ensure the much-needed generational renewal in the countryside, and of initiatives that, like this one, promote professional growth and represent an open door to new job opportunities in the sector.

"It is crucial to have a professionalized, modern primary sector that is committed to R+D+i, especially in an increasingly competitive world," he said. He also highlighted the commitment of Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura, Dromemilk Camel Bio Farm, Garden Center, Compost Majorero and MasterD to future generations of professionals in the sector.

It should be noted that these professional camps provide an unparalleled opportunity to discover profiles with diverse training bases, which can become fundamental assets for companies, after receiving elite training, such as that provided by MasterD, recognized for its excellence, and which plays a fundamental role in this process.

Thanks

Orlando Cabrera, from the Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura Group declares "I would like to express my deep gratitude to the General Directorate of Livestock of the Canary Islands, represented by Andrés Díaz Matoso. Their invaluable support and commitment to the primary sector and the autonomous community are worthy of admiration. I would also like to thank Narvay Quintero of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and Food Sovereignty for his support and commitment, who has significantly valued each of our initiatives. In addition, it is essential to thank MasterD, with whom we have maintained a relationship for more than 8 years. Their exceptional quality and professionalism make them indispensable collaborators. I am deeply grateful to all of them."
