The fishermen's guilds of the Canary Islands, against the installation of the offshore wind farm in Jandía.

The Regional Federation of Fishermen's Guilds of the Canary Islands has expressed, through a press release sent to Radio Sintonía, its total opposition to the forecasts of the Government of the Canary Islands to install an offshore wind farm in the Peninsula of Jandía, "since it would mean the death of the sector on the island and a serious damage to the fleet of other islands, in addition to serious environmental damage to the area."

 

As the Federation has learned, the draft Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition of the Regional Executive and, specifically, the Energy Transition Plan, would contemplate the area of the Jandía Peninsula as one of the susceptible to the installation of this type of parks, something that, according to the representative and spokesman of the Federation, David Pavón, clashes with what is contained in the Maritime Space Management Plan of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Climate Change, which contemplates as a Special Conservation Area (ZEC) the place indicated by the document of the autonomous executive.

"Just that area has an exceptional ecological, environmental and fishing value that would be totally ruined with the installation of an offshore wind farm," he explains. "The fishing practiced there is artisanal and absolutely sustainable, since it is an authentic underwater orchard with incalculable value, to which it is added that it is the most important fishing area for the vessels of the island, which would be seriously affected and doomed to leave the activity. "

From the Federation, they assure that they do not oppose the installation of a marine park on the island, "what we request from the Government of the Canary Islands is that, before making a decision, they meet with the Fishermen's Guild of Morro Jable to find the best place to carry out an installation of these characteristics".

In total, an offshore wind farm in the Jandía Peninsula would affect more than 80 ships that would have to be forced to leave their activity, since, as they explain, the wind turbines generate an electromagnetic field that would force them to distance themselves two miles, to which is added the noise and movement of the blades that could affect one of the most important shearwater colonies in the Canary Islands, a species protected by its fragility.
The Federation states that it will work to preserve a place and avoid the environmental and economic damage that can be done to the island of Fuerteventura if the plan contemplated in the document that is now in process in the Parliament of the Canary Islands is carried out.

The Cabildo joins the rejection of the wind farms in Jandía and Gran Tarjal.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, directed by David de Vera, "shows its rejection of the studies of the Government of the Canary Islands that indicate two areas of Fuerteventura as main and optimal for the installation of offshore wind farms. These areas are located in the Jandía Peninsula and on the east coast in front of Gran Tarajal, respectively, "they say in a press release.

 

For the island's president, Sergio Lloret López, "it is necessary to find the balance between development and sustainability, while respecting the places that have historically been a space for fishing activity."

 

The Energy Transition Plan of the Government of the Canary Islands contemplates both areas as susceptible to the implementation of wind turbines. For this reason, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, David de Vera, "reiterates his commitment to the fishermen of the Island who warn of the serious prejudice that this would mean to the artisanal fishing of Fuerteventura, in addition to irreparable environmental damage. It thus expresses its support for the Federation of Fishermen's Guilds of the Canary Islands, which in a recent statement warns that a wind farm in the Jandía Peninsula would affect more than 80 boats that would be forced to leave their activity. "

 

"Fishermen not only warn of this danger, but also of an impact that could affect one of the most important shearwater colonies in the Canary Islands, being a protected species," explains De Vera.

 

For all these reasons, the Island Corporation affirms that "it is in favor of the implementation of renewables, but excluding areas of special environmental sensitivity and always allowing compatibility with traditional fishing in Fuerteventura".

 

Nor in Amanay or El Banquete

 

It should be remembered that the Plenary of the Cabildo approved a motion requesting the General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea to delimit the areas of Baja de Amanay and el Banquete as areas where the installation of offshore wind farms is prohibited.

 

The island councilor "recalls, in addition, that from the Cabildo allegations were presented to the procedure for carrying out the Maritime Space Planning Plan (POEM), which is prepared by the General Directorate of Coasts and the Sea. A plan that defines these areas as susceptible areas for the development of offshore wind and the installation of wind turbines. The objective of these allegations has therefore been to exclude these areas from the areas allowed for the implementation of offshore wind farms."

 
For her part, the Minister of Environmental Sustainability, Lola García, adds that "the groups of fishermen of Fuerteventura and scientists have warned of the damage that could be generated by the installation of these infrastructures in this natural ecosystem. Therefore, through a motion of the Island Corporation, the inclusion of the limits of the Fuerteventura Biosphere Reserve within a protected corridor, delimited as a red zone, in a marine strip of five miles in the western sector and 3 miles in the rest of the contour was requested. "
