Fuerteventura will host a 'psychedelic conference' next November, an appointment in which a dozen speakers will participate with the aim of turning the island of Majorera into a benchmark in psychedelic assisted therapy. The purpose of this meeting is to explore its therapeutic potential and study its neurobiological mechanisms of action.
The conference, scheduled for November 19 in Corralejo, will delve into innovative approaches in mental health and the achievements and challenges of psychedelic-assisted therapy, as well as serving as a "forum for discussion, networking and generation of alliances to promote research with psychedelics in Fuerteventura" and create partnerships with "educational purposes that continue to illustrate the potential for human well-being of psychedelics".
As the organization of the conference points out in a statement, in the last 40 years important steps have been taken in this area and there are already "two substances very close to obtaining their authorization for use for medical purposes (MDMA and psilocybin), many others are in different phases of clinical trials (DMT, 5-Meo-DMT, ibogaine, LSD...)", in addition to "popular initiatives to decriminalize psychedelics of plant origin" (Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico), and countries such as Canada or Switzerland where the use of psychedelic drugs in compassionate treatments is allowed.
In addition, the team highlights that "there are multimillion-dollar investments for the development of psychedelic drugs," and ceremonies with plants of traditional use such as ayahuasca or peyote "have become globalized and, in general, there is an interest on the part of the general public in exploring the possible benefits of these substances." Based on this new interest, which is in the opinion of the organizers "an overwhelming reality", this conference seeks to serve to "reflect on the current situation and where we are going".
Society is "psychedelizing," says the statement of the organization of the event, so it is "imperative to offer evidence-based information" to "illustrate people interested in this renewed social phenomenon." To this end, this conference involves "some of the greatest international experts in research and treatments with psychedelics", who come from different disciplines and with experience in the clinical and social fields.
This conference "aims to be a forum for illustration for both professionals and the general public where a historical tour of psychedelic science and culture will be made", the main research that has been carried out in recent years will be summarized, current research will be presented, "the integration of these substances in contemporary societies will be discussed", in addition to other issues such as its legal aspects.
