Rare Earths in the Canary Islands
#11
Mario Cabrera's spot-on about the rare earth extraction in the Canary Islands. We can't rush into it without knowing the full impact, especially on our marine ecosystems.

The parliament of the Canary Islands urges the Government to deny permits to Satocan with a PNL

During the plenary session held today in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, it was agreed to reject, with the votes of all groups except VOX, the rejection of the extraction of rare earths and the investigation by the company Tenáridos, owned by Satocan.

The pronouncement has come as a result of a parliamentary initiative by the group of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista, which the groups that support the Government of the Canary Islands have amended.

Natalia Santana from Nueva Canarias said that this is a "great day" for Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands because most of the groups in the Chamber "have been able to put aside our differences and look towards the interest" of the citizens.

"We have been able to understand that this is not a political issue. It's not about colors, or acronyms, it's a matter of island feeling... belonging to Fuerteventura. This is about taking care of the present and future of the island," said the NC-BC parliamentarian.

The deputy of the Canarian Nationalist Group, Mario Cabrera González, was in charge of defending the Proposition No of Law finally approved on the paralysis of authorizations related to the permits for research and prospecting of rare earths on the island of Fuerteventura.

"Fuerteventura has shown that mining does not fit into the model of the island that we want," said Deputy Mario Cabrera and applauded the people of Fuerteventura for having "a great spirit of struggle" and confronting large companies such as Satocán now and as it was showing its opposition when Repsol wanted to carry out oil prospecting off the coast of the island. specified the deputy.

For his part, Manuel Hernández Cerezo, socialist deputy, called on the regional executive to paralyze the authorizations and oppose a model of socioeconomic and environmental development that is not the one Fuerteventura wants. "That is not the future that the majoreros and majoreras aspire to."

In this sense, he asked the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, "not to hide" behind his vice-president, Manuel Domínguez. "You are the president of the Canary Islands, and your vice-president does not do it, do it yourself and paralyze the authorizations."

The deputy for Fuerteventura explained that the initiation and development of extractions to exploit rare earths on the island will mean "serious damage to various parts of our territory, which today has the recognition of being a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and this recognition is not free, but is the fruit of the effort and commitment of generations to protect its ecological uniqueness and its unique biodiversity".
