SEPRONA investigated an alleged crime against wildlife following the publication of a video on social networks.
The SEPRONA of Fuerteventura, investigated on December 13 two men of 29 and 66 years of age, for the alleged authorship of a crime against the Protection of Flora, Fauna and Domestic Animals - Fishing of a specimen in danger of extinction and subject to specific protection rules, when capturing a specimen of angelshark "Squiatina Squatina" , included in the category species in "danger of extinction" of the Spanish National Catalogue of Threatened Species, and Royal Decree 139/2011 of List of Wild Species in Special Protection Regime.
To do this, the perpetrators of the alleged crime used harmful fishing tools as well as a metal bug that could compromise the life of the captured specimen, dragging it ashore and subsequently posing with it as a trophy, not proving at any time the return to the sea of said specimen, in the municipality of Antigua.
The publication of the alleged crime on social networks
This investigation was initiated by the SEPRONA of Fuerteventura following the publication of a video on social networks in which facts are contemplated that could constitute a possible criminal offense in the field of Protection of Flora, Fauna and Domestic Animals - Fishing of a specimen in danger of extinction and subject to specific protection regulations.
These images recorded from another camera, you could see how a person with a fishing rod drags to the shore an angelshark, included in the category of endangered species, helped by another person with a bug to finally take it out of its natural habitat and take the corresponding photos to upload them to social networks, not proving at any time the return to the sea of said specimen.
Research
The detailed analysis of the images carried out by the Civil Guard, determined that the Events occurred on December 8, 2022 on the Costa de las Salinas.
In the images, four people were identified who were involved in the capture of the specimen within their different degrees of participation, proceeding to take statements from all of them, concluding that there are indications of criminal offense for the two men who have actively participated in the capture of the angelshark.
The proceedings were referred to the Court of Guard of Puerto del Rosario and Environmental Prosecutor's Office.
