The components of the Civil Guard were aware of the facts after the NAJA-GC operation carried out on February 18 of this year and under the coordination of the Court of Instruction number 1 of Telde (Las Palmas), in which a total of 48 protected and poisonous specimens subject to the International Convention on Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) were seized. as well as the arrest of a citizen of Spanish nationality, after the information collected, it was possible to obtain the possible connection of both people, whose link lay in the private collection of exotic specimens subject to CITES regulations.

Start and development of the investigation
The Civil Guard in the exercise of its specific functions, with the information obtained and when carrying out the appropriate investigations, found that in the municipality of Telde the investigated housed an adequate facilities, a total of 50 live specimens of different species, performing administrative inspection assisted by the Municipal Veterinarian. From this intervention, the good sanitary hygienic conditions of the animals are accredited, presenting the inspected numerous documentation to protect them legally.

In the facilities it is found that 39 specimens are protected by the CITES Convention and EC Regulation No. 338/97; 5 specimens in Appendix I and Annex A respectively, including an African dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis) and thirty-four (34) specimens in Appendix II and Annex B respectively, including a cuvier alligator (Paleosuchus palpebrosus).

In addition, 18 specimens are considered potentially dangerous animals according to Decree 30/2018, such as a scorpion lizard (Heloderma horridum) and a Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) and 8 specimens are considered invasive species based on Royal Decrees 630/2013 and 216/2019, such as a horned iguana (Cyclura cornuta) and 2 frilly Agama (Chlamydosaurius kingii).

After the analysis of the documentation, it is concluded that 9 CITES specimens do not have accredited the legal origin of these as the African dwarf crocodile and a Cuvier's Alligator, 4 potentially dangerous animals are prohibited from holding (Annex I) being noteworthy a scorpion lizard and a Gila monster, and 3 invasive specimens being a horned iguana and two Agama with frills that present a potential risk of establishment and naturalization, and on the other hand, the alteration of documents of origin and use of documents of other animals that do not correspond to the specimens inspected is verified.

In addition to all this, it is verified that the investigated had acquired by his own means microchip for the identification of specimens, not proving the implantation by a veterinarian of the devices, since this practice is a clinical act.

After the discrepancies in the documents, the investigated voluntarily delivers 16 live specimens; 15 are transferred to a Foundation in Tenerife remaining in deposit and at the disposal of the Judicial Authority and one to another facility in Gran Canaria at the disposal of the Biodiversity Service of the Government of the Canary Islands.

So far this year on the island of Gran Canaria, SEPRONA has seized a total of 208 specimens of different species listed in the CITES Convention, potentially dangerous animals and invasive alien species, as well as about 500 rodents and insects in the municipalities of Agüimes, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Telde.
