A solo circumnavigated participant in the north of Fuerteventura.
Last night the 66-year-old American sailor Guy de Boer participated in the Golden Global Race, the solo round the world, ran his boat aground in the north of Fuerteventura, next to the beach of El Hierro, in the area known as "right of the Germans".
The sailor managed to get out of the boat by his own foot and took refuge on the beach, at a time when the force of the waves was quite discreet. He was helped by members of civil protection and firefighters from La Oliva.
De Boer intended and had a good chance of becoming the first American skipper to win the round the world alone aboard his 1986 Toshiba 36, now docked in the north of Fuerteventura.
The 66-year-old has competed on a wide variety of boats, from boats to Maxis as helmsman, tactician, navigator and crew, sailing more than 25,000 miles in competitive regattas; the longest is the 802-mile race from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas.
