Surgical Waiting List - Canaries
#1
Radio Sintonia:

The surgical waiting list grows by 5% in the Canary Islands.

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands published today the waiting list data corresponding to the second half of 2022, which shows an increase in the surgical waiting list, compared to the previous semester, of five percent, an indicator that is below the 6.87 national average, as can be seen from the half-yearly balance published yesterday by the Ministry of Health.

Activity in the second half of 2022 has followed the trend registered in the previous year, in which, despite the continued increase in surgical activity, reaching figures similar to pre-pandemic figures, the supply and demand curve is not balanced, or what is the same as the entrances and exits of the waiting list after the tension of the health system caused by the pandemic. The Aborda 2021-23 Plan, launched by the SCS during the pandemic to strengthen the healthcare capacities of hospitals and reduce waiting lists, in the second half of 2022 64,618 surgical interventions were performed, and in the annual calculation the increase is 2.2 percent compared to 2021.

The Ministry transfers that the Plan Aborda has allowed to intensify the activity of operating rooms one hundred percent, both in the ordinary day and outside the usual in all public hospitals of the SCS as well as in other centers, through quota referrals, renting operating rooms with the SCS's own staff, or through fully concerted activity.

It is reported that the number of patients with programmable surgical indication has been increasing since mid-2021 throughout Spain, as reflected by the Ministry of Health in its assessment of the half-yearly balance by Autonomous Community. This increase – as indicated – is a consequence of the increase in consultations and diagnostic tests, the activities less conditioned by the occupation of beds by COVID patients.

As of December 31, 2022, a total of 34,556 patients had an indication of non-urgent surgery, 1,638 more than in the previous semester, with an average of 157 days of waiting and of which 28.5% registered a wait of more than six months.

Delay

However, it is noteworthy that the delay, located at 157 days, did not exceed the ceilings reached in 2020, when it reached 163 days, and even those of December 2017 when 176.6 days of delay were registered, a time in which surgical waiting lists of more than 30,000 patients were also reached; This demonstrates the effort made to care for patients as quickly as possible. As for the median – which is the statistical data that reflects that half of the patients pending a surgical intervention wait that number of days or less – it stands at 90 days, which implies that half of the patients take less than 90 days to be operated.

58% of the surgical waiting list is absorbed by three specialties: Traumatology, Ophthalmology and General Surgery.

National

This increase in the surgical waiting list is also reflected in 12 other autonomous communities, with the average national increase of 6.87%. Above the five percent increase in the Canary Islands are Andalusia in which the increase is 25.8%, Cantabria with 12.5%, Navarra with 23.5%; or La Rioja with 10.6%; while Catalonia and Valencia registered increases similar to those of the Canary Islands with 4.8 and 4.64%, respectively.

Consultations

Between July and December 2022, the professionals of the SCS hospitals have attended a total of 1,587,382 consultations, 83,000 more than in the first semester; an insufficient increase to contain the waiting list of 139,291; with an average delay of 121 days.

69.8% of the waiting list for consultations is made up of 5 specialties: ophthalmology, dermatology, traumatology, rehabilitation and otolaryngology.

Diagnostic tests

The waiting list for diagnostic tests was reduced by 6.1% during the second half of this year, standing at 22,760 people; in a period in which a total of 433,375 tests were carried out, 46,600 more than in the first semester.

Continuity in this semester

The Ministry of Health will continue in the line of work to contain and reduce waiting lists in the autonomous community. After this complex period due to the constraints of the pandemic, an effort will continue to be made to reverse the growth trend registered throughout the national health system. During this quarter, programs have been launched to continue intensifying the surgical, consultation and testing activity with the incorporation of reinforcement personnel for such activities.

Work continues on a selective selection of patients with more delay to be treated, promoting major outpatient surgery, which does not require admission, and working with hospital services weekend surgical schedules.
