Tax exempt vehicle

Am I right in thinking that a car over 25 years old is road tax exempt but that you have to apply for it to be 'recognised'?
Anyone have any experience of this, what form is required, is it a hassle, is it worth the hassle?

I just had a Google search, and a couple of the sites say it is now 30 years before exemption.  But not sure if you can rely on all internet info.

I wouldn't have thought it would be worth it for the road tax which is around 40-50 euros.
