The Festivities of San Miguel Arcángel celebrate 284 years of history
#1
The recreations of Antigua, Pájara and Tuineje keep alive the memory of the Majorero defense against the English

284 years ago since the Battles of Cuchillete and Tamasite and Tuineje, as every October, is immersed in its festivities of San Miguel Arcángel in honor of the confrontations that in 1740 led to the expulsion of British pirates from the island of Fuerteventura.

The recreation of the English landing on the beach of Gran Tarajal, the representation of the battle on the mountain of Tamasite and the pilgrimage in honour of the saint are the three best-known acts of these festivities that have been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. However, the program collects many more quotes that remember, pay tribute and keep alive the history of the defense of the inhabitants of Fuerteventura against the invaders.

On Tuesday, the recreations started in Antigua, followed yesterday by another in Pájara. Both towns revived one more year on the night of October 12, 1740, paying tribute to the militia companies that fought in the Battle of Tamasite on November 24 of that year.

Today, Thursday, October 10, it will be the turn of Tarajalejo, where at 8:30 p.m. the town will go back in time to the night of October 10, 284 years ago. With the participation of the neighbors, the assault and subsequent landing of the English corsairs will be recreated, with the burning of José Antonio's sloop on the beach of Tarajalejo.

Tomorrow, Friday, in Tiscamanita, another recreation will take place and on Saturday 12 at noon the beach of Gran Tarajal will be filled with English corsairs, the same ones who 284 years ago disembarked and took the ravine that led them to Tuineje. The recreation will be followed by the great pilgrimage in honor of San Miguel Arcángel, which this year celebrates no less than half a century.

And on the 13th the commemoration of the anniversary of the battles of Cuchillete and Tamasite will take place. A day that promises to be the most exciting, starting with the concentration of troops in the Llano Florido at 11 in the morning, and the subsequent departure of the troops back to the town after the battle.

Festivities, in short, full of meaning and history, which keep alive the memory of one of the most epic episodes in the history of Fuerteventura. The entire program can be consulted on the networks of the City Council of Tuineje
