The Italian company ENI will start drilling northwest of Fuerteventura.

For this it has the platform "Topaz Driller" that is already located off the Moroccan coast east of Tan Tan

NEWSROOMFUERTEVENTURA

Four companies have authorization from Rabat to explore three areas near the Canary archipelago: the British Europa Oil & Gas in the Inezgane offshore area, north of Lanzarote, the Italian ENI and the Qatari Qatar Petroleum, which share a concession to drill in the Tarfaya area off the coast of Fuerteventura. and the Israeli company Ratio Petroleum Partnership in the Dakhla Atlantique ocean block, in Western Sahara waters.

In this way and according to Canarias 7 the platform 'Topaz Driller', which had arrived on August 18 at the port of Las Palmas consigned by Alfaship to undergo maintenance work and left ten days later for Morocco, is already in the maritime area where it will carry out drilling work for the Italian oil and gas company ENI.

Specifically, and according to the specialized maritime location company vesselfinder, the platform has been located for six days off the coast of Tan Tan and at a distance of 80 nautical miles from the north coast of Fuerteventura, that is, just over 130 kilometers from the Canary Islands and about 40 miles from the African coast.

Italian company Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi (ENI), associated with Quatar Petroleum, has a Moroccan license to search for oil in the Tarfaya Offshore Shallow block, a 23,900-square-kilometer strip off the archipelago's westernmost islands.

The permits were obtained by ENI in 2017 with a profit share of 75% and two years later, in 2019 Qatar Petroleum bought 30% of the Italian company's stake in the agreement with Morocco. In addition, the Moroccan state company ONHYM, has 25%.

Although the obvious risk of the oil industry hangs like the sword of Damocles over Fuerteventura, "the truth is that these are drillings a few hundred meters deep," explains engineer Fernando Swartz, "it also seems quite clear that they are carried out on the Moroccan side of the median, so the sovereignty and legitimacy of prospecting seems to be clear."

Tamara - I'm not too sure about 'north west' in the title - that doesn't tie in with the maps.
