The Reyes de España maritime avenue, in Puerto del Rosario, will host this Saturday (28th September), starting at 11.00, an act in which it is intended to break a new Guinness Record with the preparation of a sandwich of serrano ham that will measure a kilometre long . The previous record was beaten in Lebrija (Andalusia), where a 960 meter long sandwich was made. To achieve the new objective, this time in the capital of Madrid and adding 40 meters more than a sandwich, the aforementioned route will be used approximately between the areas of Playa Chica and Las Escuevas. The event takes place within the framework of the Rosario festival program 2019.
The initiative is promoted by José Carlos Prieto, who is a professional ham cutter, responsible in the Canary Islands of the company Jamones y Embutidos Josele e Hijos and member of the Association of Always United Solidarity Cutters, the latter entity that collaborates in numerous social causes. In fact, in the case of this Saturday in Fuerteventura, the funds raised will go to the Majorera Association for Mental Health (Asomasamen).
A total of fifty professional ham cutters from all corners of Spain will participate and will have the collaboration of students of hospitality of the IES Puerto del Rosario. The one-kilometre serrano sandwich will be prepared by joining bread sticks of about 70 centimetres long each, which will be supplied between three bakeries: Polished, Pantarajal and I. In addition, it is estimated that between 56 and 57 hams will be used, that is, About 350 kilos. The initiative has the participation of 250 volunteers who collaborate in the preparations. Likewise, several municipalities collaborate by lending the tables on which such a monumental sandwich will be prepared.
On Saturday, in any case, it will be a festive day, since, in parallel to the preparation of the largest sandwich in the world, child revitalization activities will be developed in the pedestrian area of Playa Chica and there will be musical atmosphere in the surroundings of the old enclosure fair (parking area of the small pier). With regard to music, a dozen groups will perform and highlights the singer Raquel Pando, who accumulates to his credit numerous national and international awards and will present his new album on mistreatment of women. The activities also include a Canarian wrestling , cochonetas on the beach, varied sports, and so on.
José Carlos Prieto explains that all Events are celebrated thanks to the collaboration of different entities, including administrations, companies and volunteers. Once the work of the Guinness Record has been completed, to collect the Money, portions of 17 centimetres of the giant sandwich will be sold, to which cheese and olive oil can be added if desired, for the price of 2 euros each. A paella will also be prepared for 700 people from which dishes will also be sold to raise funds for Asomasamen. There will also be soft drinks, beers, wines, etc., in a solidarity day and to enjoy.
