Vandals in all terrain intercepted destroying the Barranco de los Enamorados.

The warning of several citizens to environmental agents allows to prevent a group of SUVs from advancing in the area of special landscape fragility.
In a usual situation almost every day in the area, either with motorcycles, quads, or all-terrain cars, yesterday morning, Tuesday, January 10, citizen collaboration and awareness of the sustainability of the island was key for the agents of the Insular Environmental Service to intercept a caravan of vehicles that were circulating cross-country on a virgin hillside. on the left bank of the Barranco de Los Encantados, also known as Barranco de Los Enamorados, totally prohibited action, as there is no track or authorized road access in the aforementioned area.

This intervention was possible, as reported by the agents, thanks to several calls received on 112 reporting the actions contrary to environmental protection regulations that were being carried out in off-road vehicles in the Lajares area.

Given these facts, the Environmental Sustainability Area of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, directed by Vice President Juan Nicolás Cabrera, wanted to thank the awareness shown by the citizens who warned of the event, as well as launch a message to remember the fragility of the landscape of the island, which is why the insular vice president has insisted on "the importance of always circulating on the tracks authorized for it".
"We have to be aware of the seriousness of this type of action, not only because of the sanctions associated with thousands of euros that may imply, but also because of the damage caused to the existing fauna in the area, in which there are protected species that, at the moment, are in the breeding period, in addition to the deterioration caused to the landscape and spaces of high geological and paleontological value such as the fossilized dunes of the Barranco de Los Encantados, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest".

The Insular Environmental Service also recalled that "the footprints of the vehicles leave a scar on the ground that causes that in the rainy season the ravines are generated and the damages are further enlarged, also generating a call effect for other people to carry out the same actions".

Therefore, citizen involvement and collaboration is essential both in the care and protection of the natural environment, with awareness of the damage caused by this type of "off-piste authorized" traffic actions, so the entire population is urged to contact 112 whenever they witness this type of action.
