Water production becomes 300% more expensive
#1
Noticias:

Water becomes 300% more expensive in Fuerteventura due to the extra energy cost.

The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret, will demand the Government of the Canary Islands and the State Government to "increase the contribution to the Islands" in order to "cushion the effects that the increase in the cost of energy supposes" for the essential desalination of water in Fuerteventura.

As detailed by the first Island councilor during the Ordinary Meeting of the Consortium of Water Supply to Fuerteventura (CAAF), meeting this morning, Wednesday, September 28, the energy costs derived from the increase in the value of energy represent an increase of 300% for the Island Institution. If until now the energy bill, mainly derived from the costs of water desalination, was around 5 million euros, with variations in the price of energy, it grows to almost 18 million euros.

The Board of the CAAF was attended by the Minister of Water, David Vera and the first vice president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, in addition to the delegated councilors in water matters, José Sardeña, from Betancuria; Agustín Rodríguez, from Antigua; Dunia Álvarez, from Pájara; Javier Fernández, from Puerto del Rosario; Julio Santana, from La Oliva, and Vicente García, from Tuineje.

During it, President Lloret confirmed that an emergency meeting has been requested, both to the municipalities of the Island, and to the Government of the Canary Islands, in order to share the situation, since, "although we understand that we will have to make an overeffort both to the municipalities and the Island Council to face this energy surcharge in order not to raise the rates of subscribers"; in the eyes of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura "we have to demand both the State and the Government of the Canary Islands a greater commitment in public aid to the desalination of water in the Canary Islands," he stressed.

Currently the CAAF receives just over half a million euros in aid of the total of 8.5 million euros destined to cover the energy surcharges throughout the Canary Islands. A figure that, in light of the recent fluctuations in energy prices, the Consortium considers it necessary to increase.

For the Minister of Water, David de Vera, "it is necessary to seek the involvement of municipalities and councils to face the costs of electricity supply for water production, without this having an impact on an increase in consumer rates."

During the ordinary meeting, the agreement that allows the incorporation of thirteen people from a plan of the Ministry of Employment of the Cabildo, directed by Lola García, to the Consortium of Water Supply to Fuerteventura (CAAF) was followed, which will have an impact on a better service, the streamlining of the different works and improving the supply throughout the island territory.

Damping measures

In the same way, President Sergio Lloret highlighted as "very important" the culmination of the different projects that are being carried out through the Insular Plan of Cooperation in Actions of Guarantee of Domestic Water Supply (PICABAS) of Fuerteventura 2020-2025. Well, with the materialization of the works to "reduce pumping and unnecessary elevations of water" it will be achieved, in the eyes of the Institution", "to reduce the energy costs resulting from water desalination".

Likewise, Lloret focused on the Energy Self-Sufficiency Plan of Fuerteventura. A project that "should have been initiated 15 or 20 years ago" was saddened by the president, "but fortunately in this legislature has already been articulated even though it is a very complex plan," he said. With this "ambitious plan", the Island Council predicts that it will be possible not only "to guarantee that water reaches all corners of Fuerteventura, but to do so through self-sufficiency with alternative sources of energy, which will allow us to save up to 18 million euros per year".

PICABAS projects underway

The Ordinary Meeting of the CAAF gave an account during its Ordinary Session of the progress of the work in progress as part of the PICABAS 2020-2025 that, in the words of Lloret, "are going at a very good pace with very important works".

For David de Vera it is important to coordinate the improvement works and the distribution networks with the municipalities, in order to improve the supply in Fuerteventura.

Among them, the works that have been developed in the new impulsion system from the Puerto del Rosario Plant to the La Herradura deposits stand out and that, despite the incidents suffered by the old installation during the Hermine storm, the works corresponding to the new infrastructure continue to advance without inconvenience.

In the same vein, the different projects approved around the Corralejo desalination plant are advancing, which include works to expand it, specific remineralization works of the plant for the improvement of water quality, as well as a new electric energy transformation center that will be created in the facility. The three projects are currently awarded and about to begin in order not only to guarantee the supply and quality of water to citizens, but also to advance energy independence.

Likewise, the project designed for the Puerto del Rosario Desalination Plant is already in the last phase of the tender, which will include the expansion of the facility, as well as the project of remineralization of the water of the same and that, according to the forecasts of the Cabildo, has completed the administrative procedures necessary to complete the tender and award of the works.

For its part, the projects corresponding to the Gran Tarajal Plant are also going at a "good pace". The water remineralization works will start in this facility in about a week. Meanwhile, the new filters for the improvement of water collection are already in manufacture and will be located over the coming months. Finally, the civil works that will allow the noise reduction of the Plant are in the bidding phase.

In this way, "the actions linked to the main desalination plants of the Island owned by the Consortium are progressing as planned thanks to the effort we have made and that we hope will see their fruits in a short space of time," said Lloret.
