Radio Sintonia:
The fire in La Palma is "out of control" and 2,021 people have been evacuated.
The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has reported that the fire in La Palma, which affects the municipalities of Tijarafe, Puntagorda and Garafía, is now out of control. Weather conditions and changing gusts of wind have complicated the extinguishing work and have reactivated the tail of the fire in Garafía. At the moment, the fire has not entered the Caldera de Taburiente, but it has passed under El Reventón and is located in the area of the Hacienda del Cura, which raises fears that it may enter the National Park.
Right now there are 4,500 hectares affected. So far, 2,021 people have been ordered to evacuate; but there are only 32 in the reception center of Los Llanos and none in Tazacorte.
The president appealed to the responsibility of all the neighbors of the area to follow the indications of the agents before the danger that a change of wind brings the fire to the center of the town of Tijarafe. He also stressed that "in an emergency first you have to protect people, then material goods and thirdly are the tasks of extinction."
President Clavijo announced that "we have asked the Delegation of the Government of Spain in the Canary Islands and the Ministry of the Interior to activate the GRS, since the troops who are in evacuation work are facing problems to carry out the evictions and insisted on the need for the population to heed the indications of the official channels ".
The president of the Canary Islands said that the intensification of all extinction work has been ordered before night falls and before the aerial means are removed during the night hours. Right now, there are 10 activated air assets of which 5 are operating: two helicopters of average capacity of 1,500 liters, two light of 900 liters and a coordination helicopter. On the way to La Palma is a FOCA of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and a second seaplane has been activated that will arrive tomorrow.
From the Government of the Canary Islands, several ministries have been coordinated, including the Interior, Defense and Ecological Transition. The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, as representative of the Government in the area, has assured that all possible means will be made available to facilitate the extinction of the fire as soon as possible and highlighted the correct coordination of the administrations under the guidelines of the Government of the Canary Islands. In this sense, he insisted that at this time the most important thing is the maximum coordination between administrations and the maximum possible support to the professionals who are working in the field.
The president of the Cabildo de La Palma, Sergio Rodríguez, called for responsibility. "We are talking about a very serious issue, we come from where we come from and we know what emergencies mean and we have to act responsibly and listen to all the authorities and evict the houses if they ask us." In the same way, he insisted on the need for the population to be attentive to official channels and valued the coordination between all administrations.
