#1
Radio Sintonia:

27 ships will dock in the new cruise season in Puerto del Rosario before the end of this year.

Before the start of the new cruise season, the Councilor for Tourism of the City of Puerto del Rosario, Juan Jiménez, met with Julie Williams, the head of the shipping companies that serve cruise ships arriving in the capital of Majorera.

Throughout the meeting, very important issues for the municipal management of the tourist destination Puerto del Rosario were discussed, such as the possibility of including tourist information in all cruise ships arriving in Puerto del Rosario or the application of tourist information and signage based on augmented reality that is available to cruise passengers and that allows them to obtain all the information of the destination immediately in four languages.

After reviewing the previous season, a review of the schedule of ships that are scheduled to arrive during this 2023/2024 season was made.

Mayor David de Vera stressed that "the arrival of cruise ships is a strategic element to boost the economic development of the capital of Majorera and the rest of the island, being the main entry point for tourists. This factor increases services to make Puerto del Rosario friendlier for neighbors and tourists," said the municipal councilor.

For his part, the Councilor for Tourism, Juan Jiménez, informed the head of the consignee companies of the actions that are scheduled in order to energize the city, among which the continuity of the craft and gastronomy market, performances by folk groups, exhibitions of native sports, guided tours of the city by participants in PFAE courses, as well as the availability of the new Interpretation Center of the Lime Kilns, which can be visited during the stopovers of the cruises.

The forecast of cruise arrivals until December 31 is 27 ships among which vessels such as the Aida Cosma, which is the most modern ship in the Aida Cruises fleet. The season will begin on September 22 with the arrival of the Costa Fortuna of the Costa Cruises shipping company.

Finally, Jiménez took the opportunity to explain the creation of the new Municipal Tourism Council that will be constituted in the near future and that aims to have the participation of representatives of all sectors affected by tourism, inviting Julie Williams to be part of it on behalf of the cruise shipping companies.

The arrival of cruise ships to Puerto del Rosario drops 16%, according to the Popular Party.

The arrival of cruise ships to Puerto del Rosario drops 16%, according to the Popular Party. The councilors, Fernando Enseñat, Ana Padilla, Clara Peña and Antonio Borrero, presented a set of proposals focused on promoting tourism in Puerto del Rosario, highlighting the importance of practical actions and the empowerment of local resources. Thus, the popular propose to promote a climate of meetings between the city council, freelancers and tourism companies and tour operators to diversify the offer and generate local wealth. In addition, the importance of promoting local resources, such as the Molina de la Charca and the lime kilns, to offer authentic experiences to visitors, centers that are currently closed to the public, is highlighted.

For the PP 'it has been striking' the answer given by the Councilor for Tourism, Juan Jiménez, to the question posed about the drop in the number of cruise ships by 16%. Jiménez said that 'this was due to Puertos de Las Palmas'. In this regard, he was reminded that the mayor of the Port of Rosario occupies a place on the Board of Directors of the Port Authority. In relation to this situation, the Popular Group has asked for an explanation of the reason for this drop in the number of cruise ships arriving at Puerto del Rosario and to what extent it is due to the Port Authority.

Infrastructure

Regarding the urgent demands in infrastructure, the PP stresses the need to assign names to the streets of the town of Tefía, improve cleaning and basic services, and carry out reforms in its cultural center, as well as the asphalting of streets and the installation of public lighting in areas without lighting such as Tao and Las Cañadas. A demand that can almost be considered historic and that has been unfulfilled year after year.

Light Transport Shed

The People's Party also insists on the urgency of refurbishing the light transport sector booth in Puerto del Rosario, which has been in a semi-abandoned situation for almost a year. It highlights the critical situation of the sector due to the negligence of the City Council, requesting the delivery of the key and the provision of the necessary conditions to provide a decent service. Although the hut has been opened on the same morning as the plenary session in view of the motion of this group in this regard, it has been done without the booth meeting minimum conditions since it still does not have a bathroom or telephone line, all this despite being warned by the carriers themselves at the time that the previous burnt booth was replaced by a fire by the current one.

A strong fumarole on a cruise ship alerts Puerto del Rosario.

Since the early hours of this morning, a strong fumarole in one of the cruise ships stationed at the dock of Puerto del Rosario has sown alarm in the capital.

Faced with the insistence of the possibility of an accident, Fuerteventura Emergencias on its Twitter account (X) clarifies that "in view of the request for information requested, regarding a possible fire on board, in one of the cruise ships docked at the dock of Puerto del Rosario, inform that there is no emergency in progress.

In any case, the smoke on one of the cruise ships has stirred up the capital's population. While waiting for a communication from the company, we will continue to inform.

On pollution from cruise ships

Holiday cruising has become a major environmental problem for Europe and its coastal cities. The ships arrive at port, unload thousands of people who flood the streets and leave tons of pollutants in the air that cloud the environment and harm people's health. In Amsterdam, the local government has been forced to ban the entry of these giant tourist ships in order to reduce pollution levels and, in the process, limit the entry of tourists into an increasingly tense city.

However, most European cities are reluctant to take action. These vessels, despite being smaller in number than the fleets of cars that circulate in cities, have more impacts on the atmosphere in certain pollutants such as sulphur oxide (SOx), whose legal limits in Europe are less restrictive than those for cars.

More polluting fuel

The fuel used by these ships, heavy fuel oil, is the final residue that remains when the oil is distilled, that is, it is one of the most polluting and dirty that exists, as well as being very cheap," Dídac Navarro, a member of Ecologists in Action and the international Stop Cruise campaign, which calls for strict regulation of the sector to limit its impacts, told Público.
