The City Council of Puerto del Rosario, through the Department of Beaches directed by Sonia Álamo, communicates that Playa Blanca will not be able to wear the blue flag with which it was awarded in the month of May, considering the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) that the work of expansion of the promenade falls within the scope of the beach.
The ADEAC has informed the consistory, after an inspection carried out in July, that Playa Blanca meets all the requirements to wear the blue flag, except for the works that are being carried out in the area and that, it understands, is incompatible with the award.
The mayor of the capital, Juan Jiménez, understands the decision and explains that "at this moment our highest priority is to finish the promenade, we cannot paralyze a work of general interest by raising the blue flag. We know that Playa Blanca has all the guarantees for bathers and we are sure that once the works are finished we will be able to wear the blue flag again as we have done consecutively in the last 13 years".
For her part, the Councilor for Beaches, Sonia Álamo, explained that "from the government group we are not going to sacrifice the achievement of a work so necessary and demanded for years by the population of Puerto del Rosario for giving continuity to a totally voluntary award." And he added that "despite having taken all the measures in relation to the work of expanding the promenade it has not been possible to raise the flag. We accept the decision of ADEAC and from the Department of Beaches we will continue working on the improvement of services and access, through the Playa Blanca Services Conditioning Project, so that the resident population, athletes and tourists can continue to enjoy it".
ADEAC awarded the European quality label to Playa Blanca last May in compliance with criteria of excellence in the quality of water and the bathing area. Also for having the corresponding security services and improvements in accessibility, as well as compliance with current environmental regulations, availability of adequate health and safety infrastructures to guarantee the health and safety of users.
