Radio Sintonia:

Campaign to clean the seabed of Puerto Lajas.

This Sunday, September 3, a cleaning of the seabed and the sand of the beach of Puerto Lajas was held. An activity organized by the Bakali Diving Club with the collaboration of the Department of Environment of the City Council of Puerto del Rosario, Cabildo de Fuerteventura and Grupo Acción Costera de Canarias.

More than 20 volunteers, from different diving and sports clubs, participated in the day of cleaning the seabed.

The mayor of the capital, David de Vera, thanked the organizers and participants in the cleaning activity "because with this type of conference we protect our coastline, which is an important part of the natural heritage of Puerto del Rosario".

In this sense, the Councilor for the Environment, Jenifer Pérez, expressed her satisfaction "because the cleaning work yielded a very positive fact and that is that the seabed of Puerto Lajas was much cleaner than we expected. This reflects that citizens are increasingly aware of the need to keep our coasts free of waste."

In addition to the beatings on the beach, in which three volunteers from the Maxoarco Archery Club and four from the Bakali Diving Club participated, a total of 13 divers made different dives in order to recover any type of waste, two from the Morrojable Oxygen Club, four from the Fuerte Buceo Antigua club, a diver from the Fuerteventura Diving Center and six others from the Bakali Diving Club, who were joined by a boat from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura.

Finally, from the Department of Environment reminds neighbors and visitors that it is everyone's job to protect and preserve our natural resources, especially our coasts.

Seaweed removed from Puerto Lajas beach.

The City Council of Puerto del Rosario, through the Department of Beaches directed by Toñi Fdez. Aragon, and in collaboration with the ministries of Employment Promotion and Environment of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, is undertaking a cleaning on the beach of Puerto Lajas, where a large amount of algae that the tide deposited on the shore in recent days has been removed from the sand.

The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, explained that "the presence of algae is due to a natural process of the Tides, which occurs especially at this time of year."

The Councilor for Beaches, Toñi Fdez. Aragón added that "since we learned last Friday that the tide had deposited a large amount of algae on the shore and attending to the demand of the neighbors, we proceeded to find a solution in collaboration with the Cabildo. On Monday, work began on removing the algae in a sustainable way, with the advice of the Ministry of the Environment."

In this sense, the head of the Marine Observatory of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura guided the work carried out by the operators of the Employment Plan 'El Cabildo Mima su Isla' and who took special care to make a responsible withdrawal, without dragging sediment to avoid abruptly interfering in the evolution of the ecosystem.

These cleaning tasks must be repeated in the coming days because the Tides of September, being higher than those of the rest of the year, cause that with the lowering of the Tides a large amount of algae are deposited again on the shore of the beach.

The removed algae were delivered to the Association of Organic Agriculture of Fuerteventura (Ecogavia) for the production of compost and liquid fertilizer that will be distributed among the associates who request it.
