1.2 million to protect the Lara Castle area in Betancuria.

The Ministries of Sustainability and Environmental Management of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura undertake conditioning work in the recreational area of Castillo de Lara, in the municipality of Betancuria. The works consist of the restoration of stone chains for the control of soil erosion and are expected to be completed in a period of four months.

This action has an investment of more than 1.2 million euros, co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). In this way, existing stone walls in the barks and in the bed of the ravines are rehabilitated. The irrigation of the species that make up the pine forest is also executed.

The councilors Lola García and Pedro Martínez highlight the importance of restoring these elements, since they fulfill the function of curbing runoff waters and soil erosion processes.

The works have been awarded to the company TRAGSA, a project that also includes planting plant species in different areas of Castillo de Lara and replacing the fence that surrounds the recreational area, which presented a certain state of deterioration.

The Cabildo plants 6,000 shrubs in Betancuria.

The work already completed was aimed at curbing the effects of climate change with the planting of plant species, fencing and rehabilitation of walls.
In relation to the planting of 6,000 trees and shrubs in the municipality of Betancuria, the former councilor of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Lola García explains that "she has verified the good results of the conditioning work already completed in the recreational area of Castillo de Lara and Parra Medina".

"With an execution period of six months and an investment of more than 1.2 million euros, the actions were co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), within the framework of the Development Program (RDP) of the Canary Islands," explains the note.

García warns that "climate change is already occurring and administrations and citizens must act together to reduce the carbon footprint and mitigate its effects."

"In this way, the work has consisted of the reforestation of 6,000 specimens of species such as broom, nursery, cornical or sea rosemary, from the Biological Station of La Oliva. Species totally adapted to the climate and landscape of Fuerteventura", explains Lola García.

Stone walls

"The rehabilitation of stone walls on the slopes and the bed of the ravines has also been executed, most of them in the area of Parra Medina. Elements that contribute to curbing runoff water and soil erosion, "explains the former counselor.

In this way he affirms that "the agricultural abandonment of crops in terraces has caused the lack of maintenance of the stone chains, which were important elements to curb rainwater". Therefore, what has been promoted is the rehabilitation of stone walls that contribute to curbing erosive processes, something that is essential to preserve the productivity of the territory, even allowing to maintain the recharge of the underground aquifer, since erosion produces a lower capacity of water infiltrration.

The Environment Area invests almost 1.3 million euros in improving the conservation of the Pinar de Betancuria.

The Ministry of Environment of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura has completed two interventions carried out in La Finca del Castillo de Lara, located within the Betancuria Natural Park, for almost 1.3 million euros, in order to improve and protect the infrastructure for public use.

Two improvement works for the Pinar de Betancuria
The Vice President and Minister of Environment, Juan Nicolás Cabrera, moved today, Tuesday, March 21, to the old capital of Fuerteventura for the reception of the two improvement works of the area that aim "that citizens and visitors to the island majorera can enjoy this Natural Park, the pine forest and the facilities in all their splendor, without dangers, and contemplating one of the most beautiful places in Fuerteventura".

The first of the works, whose investment has amounted to more than 1.2 million euros, has consisted of the restoration of the stone chains on the Farm in order to control soil erosion, so as to avoid desertification.

The agricultural abandonment of certain crops caused the lack of maintenance in the stone chains, which favored slowing down the speed of rainfall. In that sense, the lack of these barriers led to significant erosive processes. Curbing them is essential not only to conserve the productivity of the territory, but also to maintain and increase the recharge of the underground aquifer.

Therefore, in addition to restoring the stone chains of the Farm, the different fences have also been replaced, which will protect against rodents and feral goats, dead tree species will be eliminated and an irrigation network will be installed.

Conditioning of the forest track
The second work, with an investment of more than 42 thousand euros, has consisted of the conditioning of the forest track for the management of the Finca del Castillo de Lara, which has a reforestation pine forest that represents the only mountain cataloged of public utility (MUP) of the island, where the specimens located in the most sheltered troughs, They reach 10 meters in height.

Due to the passage of vehicles, lack of maintenance and rains, the forest track had holes, very steep treads and cuts in the track caused by runoff, so it was very deteriorated and was a dangerous road for safe transit. Therefore, it had to be restored.

These two works have been co-financed by the European Union through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), and the Guidelines of the eligible actions executed by the Island Councils within the framework of the Rural Development Program of the Canary Islands (RDP) for the period 2014-2020.
