The way drivers use roundabouts continues to be one of the most common sources of problems on Canarian roads. To improve safety, Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) has issued a reminder of the correct way to approach and navigate them.

According to the DGT, safe driving depends on adjusting speed, selecting the correct lane, and always signalling clearly before changing direction.

Key guidelines from the DGT:

Approach with caution: Reduce speed and give way to vehicles already using the roundabout.
Right-hand lane: For taking the first exit or continuing straight ahead.
Left or central lane (when multiple lanes exist): For taking later exits.
Signal correctly: Use indicators to show your chosen exit, moving to the correct lane before leaving.
Avoid sudden braking or unnecessary lane changes, which increase the risk of accidents.
Fines for roundabout offences:

Crossing from the inner lane directly to the exit: Considered reckless driving, €500 fine and 6 penalty points. Exits should always be taken from the outer lane.
Entering without giving priority: A common serious offence, €200 fine and 4 points (more if reckless).
Changing lanes incorrectly or without signalling: €200 fine (with points if dangerous).
Excessive speed inside a roundabout: Up to €500 fine and 6 points if deemed reckless.
Ignoring pedestrian crossings at exits: €200 fine and up to 4 points.
The DGT stresses that roundabout discipline is essential for reducing accidents and ensuring safer roads for both residents and visitors across the Canary Islands.

Johnr:- If they implement this their coffers will be overflowing by Christmas Smile Smile Smile

It's a complete change of how locals were taught to drive by instructors. Both my children had lessons and passed their test in Puerto and they were never taught this way by their instructors. It's one of the reasons why I hated driving in Puerto! Rolleyes
