If you are resident in Spain and still have the Green Card instead of the plastic TIE, you might need to make an application for a TIE now, due to the new EU Entry Exit Scheme, due to come into force this autumn.
The TIE is recognised as proof of your residency, as it is biometric. The Green Card is not biometric. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) requires you to have a visa. The TIE give you exemption from the need for this ETIAS visa. The Green Card DOES NOT give you an exemption.

So, in a nutshell, if you are still using the Green Card, it's time to change it for a TIE, to avoid any issues at the Spanish border and to exempt you from the ETIAS visa for Spain.
