La Oliva will take to the plenary the proposal to penalize the Red Cross for "serious deficiencies" in the safety of the beaches
The sanctions against the successful bidder of the lifeguard service could reach more than 200,000 euros, for very serious breaches,

The City Council of La Oliva has adopted a firm position to guarantee safety on its beaches and protect the rights of lifeguards," says the Consistory in a press release. Parallel to the recent demonstrations of a group of lifeguards from the municipality, who denounced "precarious and unsafe" working conditions on the beaches of Fuerteventura, the Consistory assures that it had already been working on a proposal that it will take to the plenary session to sanction the company responsible for the rescue, lifeguard, surveillance and first aid service: Red Cross.

On June 27, during the ordinary plenary session, the proposal to sanction the Spanish Red Cross entity awarded the contracts for the service in the natural aquatic areas of the municipality, will be discussed. Technical reports, issued on June 5 and 17 by the person responsible for the contracts, have pointed out "very serious breaches", for which a fine of 50,426.46 euros is proposed for Lot 1 (West zone) and 171,792.90 euros for Lot 2 (East zone), adding up to a total of 222,219.36 euros.

The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, has declared: "We are not going to allow the rights of lifeguards to be violated or the safety of our beaches to be endangered. From the City Council we are committed to the safety and well-being of all workers and users of our coasts".

Blanco also added: "We understand the discomfort of the first responders and recognise the seriousness of the situation. We have been closely monitoring the execution of the service and, in view of the repeated deficiencies, we have decided to carry out this sanctioning procedure. Our goal is to ensure that the parameters set out in the contract are met to ensure a quality service."

The City Council says that it reaffirms its commitment to the quality and safety of services on the beaches of the municipality of La Oliva, adopting the necessary measures to correct the deficiencies detected and ensure optimal conditions for all users and workers.
