The "used" Eurofigthers will begin to arrive in the Canary Islands in 2023.
The government signs the purchase, for 2,043 million euros, of the 20 Eurofigther that will replace those sent to the Canary Islands
Spain has signed this Thursday the purchase of twenty new Eurofighter fighter jets for 2,043 million euros. "This is a new order to the European consortium to be able to reinforce the capabilities of the Air Force in the Canary Islands, where the current F-18 Hornet of the 46th Wing will conclude their operational life in 2023-2024," says ABC.
The first units will be delivered in 2026, concluding deliveries in 2030, so those that arrive on the islands will be used from other Spanish bases, the new ones will stay in Seville and Albacete.
The fighters of the Canary Islands will be used from Seville and Albacete
In a first phase, the Air Force will send Eurofighter fighters to the Canary Islands from the bases of Morón de la Frontera (Seville) and Los Llanos (Albacete). The twenty of the new contract will serve to replace the Eurofighters that are destined from those two bases to Gando.

Defense will deploy predator drones in the Canary Islands for immigration surveillance and territorial waters.
In September they participate in an air exercise with F18 that will be based on the island of Lanzarote.
The current geopolitical map that emerged in the 20s of the twenty-first century leaves numerous questions on the table, issues that have been addressed for some time, especially after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. In this sense, the NATO meeting in Madrid and the new forms of war that are being studied in the intelligence centers are leading to trying to cover the borders with technology and new weapons that a few years ago were not contemplated by the Spanish or island authorities.
To the promise of arrival of the new (relatively) Eurofighter announced by the Spanish government to replace the battered F18 based in Gando, is now added the modern Predator drones, which in the medium term will have a headquarters at the military airfield of Lanzarote, located in Guacimeta, next to the airport.
The NR05 system of the Air Force, or what is the same, the MQ-9 Predator-B drones, will fly in a few months, and for the first time, over the Canary Islands. These unmanned, remotely operated aircraft, are still in the process of obtaining initial operational capability, taking a key step this fall.
In an exclusive of the digital Confidencial, "it has been possible to confirm that Predator drones will be deployed in September at the Military Aerodrome of Lanzarote, located in the municipality of San Bartolomé, in the center of the island".
Official sources from the Air Headquarters confirm to ECD that, so far, the Predators have only operated from their base in Talavera la Real (Badajoz), where the 23rd Wing, responsible for these teams, is located.
It will be the first time the Predators have been sent to another air base. "They will deploy in the Canary Islands, because Lanzarote will be the secondary base of operations of this weapon system of the Air Force," says the digital.
Air Defense of Southern Spain
According to the Air Headquarters, the Predators will arrive in Lanzarote in September, and from there they will participate in the exercise 'Sirio 22', which this year will take place in October.
The 'Sirio' is the largest annual advanced training exercise for the Air Force's operational units. It is directed by the Air Combat Command, and it trains defensive air missions in response to incursions and movements of unidentified aircraft, with the aim of training and evaluating the air defense system in mainland Spain, in the Balearic Islands and in the Canary Islands.
Control from Lanzarote and Talavera
The Predator drones that are deployed in the Canary Islands in those months will be operated, both from the Lanzarote aerodrome itself, and from the talavera la Real base. According to the Air Force, takeoff and landing will be controlled from Lanzarote, where two GCS (ground control stations) will have been moved to pilot the aircraft.
Full operability in 2023 on the islands
For the moment, the deployment in Lanzarote will be temporary, until the exercise 'Sirio 22' is held in October, although, as indicated, that Canarian airfield has already been designated as a secondary base of operations for unmanned aircraft.
The next challenge for the military of the 23rd Wing that operates the Predators will be to achieve the final operational capacity that, according to Infodefensa, "is expected around 2023. These are steps that are followed with any new system that comes to the Air Force."
Canary Islands, "a key point" for the Ministry of Defense
"The air defense of the Canary Islands is one of the sensitive points of the deployment of the Armed Forces in national territory," says El Confidencial.
Just a few weeks ago, "the Ministry of Defense signed the purchase of 20 Eurofighter fighter jets. The arrival of the fighters, scheduled between 2026 and 2030, will allow the Air Force to replace Gando's F-18s, which were once acquired second-hand from the US Navy," the note explains.
"The Moroccan rearmament has been causing senior military commanders to demand improvements in the weapons systems deployed on the southern flank of Spain for years," they warn. "The addition of American F-16 fighters to the Royal Moroccan Air Force triggered some alerts, since technologically, for example in terms of radar range, these aircraft are superior to Gando's F-18s."
Against drug trafficking and boats
The incorporation of the Predator to the Armed Forces has opened great expectations of being able to use these devices in all kinds of missions.
Sources of the Air Force point out that, once the operational capacity is reached, the objective is to consolidate the use of drones in national territory in two aspects. One will be the permanent surveillance missions, in which the aircraft of the Air Force already participate, together with the ships of the Navy and the troops of the Army.
The other will be support for State action in different areas. They cite as an example the fight against drug trafficking, illegal immigration, emergencies... where civilian authorities may require the use of Predators.

Military personnel move from Tenerife to Fuerteventura.
Troops of the garrison of Tenerife embarked today on the ferry "Volcán de Tamadaba" for transfer to Morro Jable, where they will soon carry out military training exercises.
This morning they embarked 300 soldiers and 60 vehicles, which are added to those that had already moved two days ago the ferry "Al Andalus Express".
The troops are added to material that has been moved in recent days in what is pointed out will be joint manióras of several garrisons of the islands. So far the army has not informed the island's media of these maneuvers.
Tamara: I believe Siria 22, the air force exercise has also started, I'll post one or two vids when I find them
Sirio 22, the largest nationwide training exercise, is underway.
The Syrian 22nd exercise is being carried out in the Canary Islands, specifically at the Gando Air Base (Gran Canaria) and the Lanzarote Military Aerodrome. This is the most important nationwide training exercise in our air force.
The Air and Space Army, in addition to the mission of defense of the airspace of national sovereignty that it has permanently assigned, must maintain its units trained for use in the operations to be determined.
The Air Combat Command (MACOM) is responsible for carrying out an increasingly specialized and realistic training and, consequently, for organizing this exercise. The Syrian serves to instruct and evaluate the air units of combat, combat support and command and control system, in order to ensure their readiness for operations, as well as to maintain the operational readiness and readiness status required to constitute, quickly and effectively, air operating organizations.
In addition, Syria 22 will continue to include the implementation of NATO's new TACEVAL assessment model, under which nations begin to evaluate in their national exercises the capabilities offered to the eNRF (Enhanced NATO Response Forces) for the following year. AIRCOM EVALS validates these assessments by certifying the readiness of special operations capabilities.
This will be the first time that special operations-related capabilities have been evaluated under NATO's SOFEVAL program, by a national team, and certified by a NATO Special Operations Headquarters NATO team, present during the execution phase of the exercise.
Around 2000 people from 21 units of the Air and Space Army and a total of 35 aircraft from the different combat and transport wings participate in the exercise.
On the other hand, the Sirius 22 includes the training of the expeditionary capacity of the Air and Space Army, through the installation of a deployable air base in the facilities of the Gando Air Base.
The Sirio 22 is a very complex exercise in itself and more to be organized in the Canary archipelago, with what it entails at the logistical level, both for the transfer and maintenance of material and all the participating personnel. The realization of this exercise is of utmost importance for the Air and Space Army for the fulfillment of its missions.

Two planes surprise together over the skies of Puerto del Rosario.
These are the air and space force manoeuvres called Ocean Sky 2023
NEWSROOMFUERTEVENTURA
Yesterday afternoon, the flight of two planes over the island's capital surprised locals and strangers by firing off an endless number of theories related to the world of aviation.
Today it has emerged that ENAIRE, the Spanish air navigation manager, has begun an active collaboration with the Air and Space Force, which is responsible for air control of the military manoeuvres known as Ocean Sky 2023.
These manoeuvres will take place in the Atlantic Ocean, near the coasts of the Canary Islands, and will run from 16 to 27 October.
The military exercise will involve almost fifty aircraft, most of which will operate from the Gando Air Base in Gran Canaria. ENAIRE, through its professionals at the Canary Islands Control Centre and the Gran Canaria Control Tower, will play an essential role in the coordination of civil and military flights.
The main objective of this civil-military coordination is to improve the efficiency of air operations, in particular, the departures and recoveries of military traffic, with the aim of minimising any possible impact on civil operations at the airports of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
Combat and Support Maneuvers
The purpose of the so-called Ocean Sky 23 is the training and evaluation of combat units and support units, as well as the maintenance of the high level of readiness of Command and Control capabilities, also integrating the foreign units invited in an air superiority campaign.
Ocean Sky is an international air combat manoeuvre organised by the Air and Space Force. In fact, they are the largest air combat manoeuvres taking place in Europe. This year's edition, Ocean Sky 23, is operated from Gando Air Base in Gran Canaria.
Last year, fighters from all the Air Force's Combat Wings participated: 11th Eurofighter Wing / Morón-Seville; 12th F18 Wing of Torrejón_Madrid; 14th Eurofighter/Albacete Wing; 15th Wing F18 Zaragoza and 46th Wing the F18s of Gando. This year is similar, along with the participation of the F16 of the Greek Air Force and F16 of the Turkish Air Force.
The Ocean Sk23 exercise is conducted in four phases:
The first and last are of a more logistical nature: Deployment (the first) and Redeployment (the fourth) of forces, with the aim of carrying out all the tasks of preparing personnel and aircraft, as well as the deployment/withdrawal of participants.
A second, theoretical phase is aimed at the knowledge of the aircraft participating in the exercise, combat tactics, etc., in order to complement the flight training.
And finally, there is a third practical phase with combat training missions in a variety of scenarios and with a large number of combat aircraft that allow for increased interoperability between the different participating units, as well as evaluating and improving the tactics, techniques and procedures used in this type of mission.
European Air Refuelling Training EART 2023
At the same time, the 9th edition of the European Air Refuelling Training EART 2023 is taking place, led by the EATC and organized by the Spanish Air Force at the Lanzarote Air Base. France, Italy and Spain are participating with air tankers.
EART 2023 focuses on "multi-tanker formation" and "tanker-to-tanker rendezvous" procedures, for in-flight reprovisioning. Airbus A330MRTT are participating in France, Boeing KC767 in Italy and Airbus A400M in Spain.
The Lanzarote Military Aerodrome has its own permanent Air Force personnel, as well as an air defence radar (the EVA 22, which covers the Canary Islands and the maritime area up to the Sahara). It has no permanent military aircraft. These are stationed at the Gando Air Base (Gran Canaria).
