I don't know why they widened the road all the way back to the Horizons/Triqui roundabout but only made 2 lanes for the final 300m or so, though. Think it would have been a lot better if they had made it 2 lanes earlier on!

It's also much trickier to get out from the estate now, as you still have cars coming on from the Caleta side at the same time as cars are turning in. Not to mention how much more difficult it is to get out of Mercadona now the back road is two way and they still allow parking right up to the entrances so you can hardly see anything...

I tend to disagree, concerning the roundabout, I think it works well, yes you have to be vigilant, but it is a lot better than it was, but access from Mercadona, I agree fully, I actually pull onto the no parking area immediately out side the rear Mercadona, that allows me to see in my mirrors what is coming soon and my wife can see what is coming up, but coming out of the back of lidl is a real lottery, fortunately we only go there one every 3/4 weeks

CANARY ISLANDS PRESIDENT: It,S TIME TO RESTRICT PROPERTY PURCHASES BY NON-RESIDENTS’

The President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, has stated that the time has come to negotiate with the European Union to introduce restrictions on property purchases by foreigners in the archipelago. This declaration was made during a parliamentary session this week, in response to a question raised by his own party.

Although the measure is still in the initial phase of legal evaluation, Clavijo's position reflects a growing concern among the local population about the consequences of demographic growth and the pressure on infrastructure and public services that this entails.

The regional government has already begun preparing the necessary legal studies to formulate this proposal to the new European Commission formed after the upcoming European elections.

Despite initial opposition from other political parties, the decision to advance with legal studies shows an openness to exploring policies that could moderate property purchases by non-residents, in an effort to protect access to housing for residents and preserve the standard of living in the islands.

Clavijo said that he understands the "discomfort and unease" felt by the population due to the demographic increase that has not been accompanied by a proportional development in services and infrastructure and emphasised the importance of finding a balance that allows maintaining the appeal of the Canary Islands to tourists while improving the quality of life of its residents.

In this regard, he pointed out that there are also many empty properties on the islands and properties that are dedicated to holiday rentals or are sold to foreigners who are "buying at very high prices."

David Toledo, president of the Nationalist Group, reinforced this view, adding that the rapid population growth, which has seen an increase of more than 500,000 people so far in the 21st century, has brought negative consequences for locals. He agreed that the number of empty houses and properties dedicated to holiday rentals or sold at high prices to foreign buyers is a major part of the challenge facing the islands.

Toledo also suggested that the Canary Islands could follow the example of countries like Malta and Finland, which have implemented restrictions on property purchases by foreigners. He proposed that this situation serve as a "task" for the next EU Commission, arguing that the region cannot make these decisions alone and that it is necessary to coordinate actions both at the national level in Madrid and at the European level in Brussels.

This debate underlines the complexity of managing tourist and demographic growth in island regions like the Canary Islands, where the capacity to expand services and infrastructure is limited and where the balance between welcoming tourists and protecting the interests of local residents is an ongoing matter of public policy.

Clavijo's proposal, although in a preliminary stage, reflects a significant attempt to address these concerns through the regulation and control of the real estate market in the face of an increasingly challenging globalised landscape.

The government authorises new hotel with almost 1,000 beds in Corralejo
This is a mandatory procedure that is carried out prior to the final authorisation by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura

Diario de Fuerteventura 0 COMMENTS 13/05/2024 - 14:33
The Government Council of the Canary Islands gave its approval on Monday to the proposal for prior administrative authorisation for the construction project of a four-star hotel establishment in Corralejo (La Oliva).

This is a mandatory procedure that, before the final authorisation by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, assesses that the hotel project complies with the standards of quality and energy efficiency.

The Law on Tourism Renewal and Modernisation of the Canary Islands establishes that prior authorisations will only be granted for tourist accommodation places in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, as a requirement for urban planning licences aimed at the new establishment of accommodation establishments.

These hotel and non-hotel establishments, in the latter case when the territorial planning does not expressly prohibit them, must comply with building quality and service standards that guarantee the minimum environmental impact in terms of, at least, water savings, noise and light pollution and waste management.

In addition, it must meet the conditions of density, equipment, infrastructures and services established by regulation to configure a model of excellence and eco-efficiency.

According to the documentation presented, the establishment is planned on a plot with an area of 66,352 square meters, with a capacity of 478 units and 956 accommodation places.
