After certain information recently poured into different media and social networks, from the City Council of Puerto del Rosario it is brought to the attention of the citizens that the euthanasias that are carried out in the municipal kennel are only undertaken in a timely manner and under strict compliance with the provisions of Law 8/1991, of April 30, of Protection of Animals.
 
Euthanasia is always carried out under strict veterinary control, as established by Decree 117/1995, of May 11, which approves the Regulation of Law 8/1991, of April 30, on the Protection of Animals, and only in situations of emergency and extreme need, in those animals that have less possibilities of being adopted, either because they have chronic pathologies, aggressiveness, are elderly, or because they have been in the facilities for many years, avoiding, in this way, the overcrowding of the animals housed in the municipal facilities.
It should be noted and reiterated that the Department of Animal Welfare of the City of Puerto del Rosario encourages, at all times, the adoption of dogs and the fight against abandonment. Unfortunately, when the facilities of the municipal kennel are overwhelmed due to animal abandonment in the municipality, resulting in an oversaturation of the limit of the occupation of the kennel, it prevents maintaining good animal welfare conditions within the facilities.
The objective in the municipal kennel by the Department of Animal Welfare is always to maintain zero sacrifice and that most of the dogs that arrive at the facilities are given up for adoption as soon as possible, either with citizen collaboration, disseminating which are the dogs in adoption of the kennel, or through other entities.
The City Council of Puerto del Rosario defends and covers the professional performance of the veterinarian of the municipal kennel, always respecting their criteria and good work at the head of their responsibility.

The Kennel of Puerto del Rosario will have rehabilitation and expansion works.

In a statement issued by the City Council of Puerto del Rosario it is reported that the mayor of the municipality, Juan Jiménez, accompanied by the Councilor for Works, Peña Armas, and the Councilor for Animal Welfare, Yanira Domínguez, visited on Wednesday the municipal kennel of Puerto del Rosario, where the stakeout act was signed with the company awarded the contract for the rehabilitation and expansion works of this space , INSAE Infraestructuras, S.A., which will start the works after the signing of this contract.



The project, for an awarded value of 552,588.74 euros, must be completed in seven months.
An installation has been designed whose different spaces are accessible and facilitate the contact and approach of citizens with the animals sheltered. The Councilor for Animal Welfare, Yanira Domínguez, together with the veterinarian of the center, participated in the design of expansion of the kennel according to the needs of the same.

Today, the kennel is obsolete, and the rooms available to the center are insufficient to meet the high demand for lost, abandoned and / or seized animals that exist in the municipality. Therefore, this new project, in order to maintain adequate conditions of health and animal welfare in the kennel, as established in Article 14 of Law 8/1991, on the Protection of Animals, includes, among other works, 16 new rooms, an outdoor parking, a main administration and reception building, facilities for canine residence and also for dangerous dogs, facilities for canines in quarantine, as well as consultation room, food and auxiliary material warehouse, bathroom, office and rest area for the workers of the center, as well as parking of animal transport vehicles, among others.

Extension works to accommodate all animals
In the words of Mayor Juan Jiménez, "from the Public Administrations we must redouble efforts to adapt all the services and infrastructures at their disposal to accommodate many sensitivities. In the case of the municipal kennel of Puerto del Rosario, it had long required this extension in order to accommodate all the dogs that stop in this space. This new project, promoted by the Department of Animal Welfare directed by Yanira Domínguez, responds to a historical need to expand the hospital capacity of the municipal kennel and improve its operation to keep dogs in the best possible conditions. "

In addition, the first municipal president, Juan Jiménez, has placed special emphasis on the "importance of adopting, and for this, the kennel of Puerto del Rosario has its doors open, to encourage the adoption of dogs that today are in the municipal kennel, waiting to be adopted and have the opportunity to find a home, a family that loves them, respects them, and gives them the life they deserve."

Infrastructure modernization
The Councilor for Animal Welfare, Yanira Domínguez, points out that "the design of this project of rehabilitation and expansion of the facilities of the municipal kennel, in addition to adapting to the needs of the same, respond to a historical demand to make it a facility as adaptable and welcoming as possible for dogs. "

For her part, the Councilor for Works, Peña Armas, stressed that "these works are due to our commitment to the modernization of the municipal kennel, which had been obsolete for many years, and that after these works, will have totally new, modern facilities adapted to reality. For us, the start of these rehabilitation and expansion works of this space has been a priority, and we will speed up as much as possible so that this project of the expanded kennel becomes a reality as soon as possible".

Awareness of animal abuse and awareness of adoption.

Fighting and raising awareness against abandonment and animal abuse, as well as raising awareness about responsible pet ownership and the importance of animal-assisted therapy, in addition to promoting adoptions, are some of the clear objectives sought by the initiative 'Simba's colleagues', launched at the IES Puerto del Rosario by the therapeutic pedagogue of the center , Anayara Tarré, and in collaboration with the municipal veterinarian and head of the capital kennel, Ana Franquis.



'Simba's colleagues', an awareness project
The project has been supported by the Department of Animal Welfare of the City of Puerto del Rosario directed by Yanira Domínguez, to encourage adoptions and give visibility to the more than 30 dogs that are currently in the kennel and, also, to promote responsible pet ownership in the younger population.

'Simba's colleagues', that's the title of this project, "because since Simba came to my family four years ago, he changed our lives," says Anayara Tarré. His mother, with fibromyalgia and agoraphobia, was gradually overcoming her fears of staying in open spaces and significantly improving her mental health, thanks to Simba.

A project for the youngest
And that is why this project is aimed at the youngest, who, according to studies, increasingly suffer from mental problems, and "dogs are the best therapy for health".

In addition, the campaign 'Simba's colleagues' seeks to encourage people to adopt dogs from the kennel through social networks, inviting the population to upload photos with their pets and tag the municipal kennel with the hashtag #adoptaperreramunicipal. In addition, original t-shirts have been created with the face of one of the dogs in the kennel, highlighting that they have no home but a lot of love to give, inciting adoption.

This past Tuesday, April 18, 100 high school students of IES Puerto del Rosario received this information, and were able to meet in person some dogs that live in the kennel of Puerto del Rosario, waiting for a family to adopt them, love them and respect them and can form a home.

The next talk will be on April 25 with students of 4th ESO of the same center and will be extended to those institutes that are interested.
