The plot between the main beach - Los Pozos and the Congress Centre in Puerto del Rosario, previously owned by DISA, has been swapped with the new owner - Puerto City Council. This means the 12,000 m² wasteland will finally get some proper upgrade in the foreseeable future.

The City Council of Puerto del Rosario, together with the public company GESPLAN, within the Support Plan for the Technical Offices promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands, is working on a pilot experience in the Canary Islands whose objective is to bring the Urban Planning to citizenship.

After a rigorous evaluation of proposals from different municipalities of all the Islands, Puerto del Rosario has been selected to host the most ambitious participatory project on Urban Planning to date.

The purpose of this work is that it is the neighbours themselves, individually or collectively, who decide the design characteristics of a large free space, contributing in the process the needs and desires they have about it.

The site object of the project is that which was formerly occupied by the DISA company facilities, in the surroundings of Los Pozos beach and the Palace of Formation and Congresses of Fuerteventura and that has been recently acquired by the City Council.

This plot has more than 12,000 square meters that can be used for uses compatible with free space and, among other aspects, will be decided during the participatory process that has been designed, giving voice to potential users.

The first appointments take place on September 24 and 25 in the classroom E of the Training and Congress Palace:

The Plenary Session of the City Hall of Puerto, held on the afternoon of this Monday, October 28, unanimously approved all political forces, urgently undertake a Provisional Plan for Free Parking in the down town area, with paved and marked areas, and either on publicly or privately owned land, in which case the appropriate authorizations of their owners will be required, requesting the necessary machinery from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura to carry out said Plan, as feasible.

It was also agreed that the City Council develop a planning of public spaces for parking that solve the problems of parking in the area of the capital in the medium or long term.

For the Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, Juan Jiménez, this initiative will allow to combine the interests of all the residents of Puerto del Rosario, since there will continue to be a wide range of regulated parking lots only in the morning and not operational on weekends (zone green and blue) but also the possibility of parking in the centre for free and with all the guarantees of security and accessibility, avoiding inconvenience to the neighbours of the areas close to these spaces enabled as free parking.

The regulation of parking lots in the centre with the blue zone and the green zone helps to allow the rotation of parking lots and makes it possible for a greater number of people to go to administrative units and green areas, as parking is easier, but it is not a solution for the hundreds of neighbours who have to park all morning in the down town area.

As public lands that are going to be the object of this Plan we have the one that is currently in service at the fairgrounds (400 places), a plot of 4,000 m2 behind the Old Health Center (150 places) and the land of the site of the former DISA, of about 10,000 m2, which is already owned by the municipality (400 seats).

Within private lands that can be the object of this Plan, if the owners authorize it, another 300 places can leave

For the Councillor for Works, Manuel Travieso, according to the expectations of this Plan, in the centre of Puerto del Rosario, there will be a short distance between 1,000 and 1,250 free parking spaces, in paved and properly marked areas.

After these months of almost mandatory stop, the Capital City Council , through the Urbanism area directed by Javier Fernández Ledo , returns to work hand in hand with GESPLAN to continue with the pilot project started a year ago for the participatory design of the public space of the old DISA plot , framed within the Support Plan for Technical Offices promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands.

This participatory process, in which a large number of residents of Puerto del Rosario have been involved, completed, during the last months of 2019, the first four phases of the program out of a planned total of six.

Among the actions that were undertaken, there were open days for all interested public, workshops with groups and associations or data collection through surveys and personalized interviews. Some works that had good citizen participation and that culminated in a return day in which the results were announced, all thanks to the involvement of the members of the Motor Group .

At the beginning of this year 2020 and in view of the great interest that citizens showed in the project, the works were finalized to continue with this process through municipal means , tasks that had to be paralyzed due to the COVID-pandemic. 19.

The mayor of Puerto del Rosario, Juan Jiménez , emphasizes that “ the municipal administration continues to support a participatory and consensual development of the city, which would not be possible without the involvement of the residents who contribute an incalculable effort and great value to this project whose objective benefits the entire municipality ”.

In the words of the area councillor , Javier Fernández Ledo , “ once the situation once again allows us to continue with this important and pioneering participatory process, hand in hand with new technologies and in collaboration again with the Government of the Canary Islands through the company public GESPLAN, the City Council has not hesitated to resume the activity with the aim of completing Phases 5 and 6, thus giving continuity to this valuable work promoted by the Project's Motor Group, a multidisciplinary and diverse group born of interest and involvement of citizens in public work, and I ask you to continue participating ”.

In the coming weeks , all the scheduled tasks will be developed, such as: the construction of the proposals, the operational programming, the generation of the idea-force or the evaluation of the process , all according to the established program with the aim of being able to complete it sooner. of the end of this year .
