Poachers denounced

Noticias:

Three poachers with 128 kilos of mussels reported.

Agents of the Fiscal and Border Patrol (PAFIF) of the Civil Guard of Fuerteventura denounced on September 15 and 22 of this year three people, two of them with antecedents, who were catching a prohibited species of seafood prohibited throughout the year.

The first intervention occurred at 11.40 a.m. on September 15, 2022 when the components of the Fiscal and Border Patrol were carrying out a surveillance along the coastal coast of Agua Liques, in the town of Costa Calma, in the municipality of Pájara, stopping the driver of a vehicle that left the cliff, a rocky area and difficult to access.

After a first inspection of the vehicle, the Civil Guard found signs that related its driver to illegal shellfishing, so they asked him to open the trunk finding inside a sack and a carrycot with 55 kg of mussels "Perna perna".

The Civil Guard carried out a second and third intervention during the past day September 22 between 19.30 and 20.00, when the components of the Fiscal and Border Patrol carried out a surveillance along the coastal coast of Agua Liques, stopped first the driver of a vehicle and half an hour later to another vehicle, to which the agents of the Civil Guard observed how they left the cliffed area where two people were carrying out poaching.

After a first inspection of the vehicles, the Civil Guard found in the first trunk several bags and a carrycot with 56 kg of mussel and in the second trunk a bag with 17 kg of Perna perna mussels.

The objective of all the people denounced was to benefit economically through the commercialization of the captured specimens, whose capture is prohibited, and which further decimated the already worrying population of the species and hindering its recovery.

The agreements with the Vice-Ministry of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council of Fuerteventura are what have led to take measures to combat poaching and the protection of protected species, such as the "Perna, perna" Canarian Mussel and the "Patella Candei" known as Lapa Majorera, which is in danger of extinction, leading to the intensification of interventions of this type to preserve the island's shellfish resources, which are severely decimated.

The capture of the Canarian Mussel is prohibited throughout the year throughout the coastal coast of Fuerteventura by the Order of July 16, 2004 (BOC nº 141 OF July 22, 2004) in which the ban of this species was established due to the worrying situation in which the species was, jeopardizing its permanence and future development.

Infringement

The Civil Guard intervened the specimens and returned them to the sea alive and processed the corresponding complaints to the people who captured the mussels for serious administrative infraction to article 70.3 of Law 17/2003 of Fishing of the Canary Islands, a complaint that was sent to the Vice Ministry of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands.

Infractions for these facts can be sanctioned with a fine of 301 to 60,000 euros, as well as the confiscation of the products or goods obtained and the gear or tools used.

There is a similar problem with "divers" taking canarian lobsters and selling them at daft prices.
The group I go with do report any strange free or bottle divers directly to the GC in Corry harbour.
Any snorkelers off Corry Look out for turtles.
