I agree the island needs help but IMO at the moment that should come in the way of financial assistance from central Government not from an influx of untested visitors from countries with current infection rates per 100,000 of

Remember too that these numbers reflect only those tested, actual infection rates are probably significantly higher.

Does Fuerteventura really need to open up to this right now?

I think it's just a few months early myself but time will tell, while a vaccine & pre flight test will not be a silver bullet it could significantly help to keep the infected visitors numbers down along with social distancing, hand washing etc

I think it's just a few months early myself but time will tell, while a vaccine & pre flight test will not be a silver bullet it could significantly help to keep the infected visitors numbers down along with social distancing, hand washing etc

But again, it's all about balance, isn't it? Without wishing to make light of all the deaths, in most people COVID is a mild to medium illness, from which the majority recover.

I believe the death rate below the age of 60 years is much lower than those 60 and over. 
Maybe the answer is to look after older people and get economies moving with people under 60.
That said the way data is collected doesn't fill me with any great confidence.  I agree with Robbo
its about getting the balance right.

Yes, it is all about balance, I agree but what is balance?

Tell everybody on Fuerteventura that's over 60 to stay inside because we are opening up the economy to thousands of untested travellers from high infection countries in the middle of a worldwide pandemic?

Tell everybody over 60 that wishes to travel to Fuerteventura that they can't for their own safety because it's potentially unsafe?

That's not a balance, it's an imbalance (we are not over 60 by the way)

For me the logical way ahead is

A pre flight test for everybody who wishes to travel, regardless of age, it ensures as much as is reasonably possible, clean flights arriving into a low infection destination

Then

The local population can in as much as is reasonably possible go about their lives in a safe environment

The visitors / holiday makers can enjoy their time in as much as is reasonably possible in a safe environment

That for me is a balance

Also, I think the airlines need to step up to the plate as regards accomodating testing in some way, they have skin in the game, planes on the ground that they'd rather have in the air rather than just whinging & moaning, do something proactive to improve consumer confidence maybe & I've no doubt it will be a V shaped recovery for them

Finally as regards the over 60's, we usually travel late September / early October, the over 60's  seem to be a significant player numbers wise from what I've seen

Canary Islands Government have just announced that they will introduce to the local parliament this week a law requiring all international visitors to have a PCR or negative Antigen test done a maximum of 72 hours before checking into their accomodation.
