Protest against expansion of Corralejo port - Sunday 30th April 2023
#1
Radio Sintonia:

A unanimous cry: Save the bay of Corralejo!

We interviewed the marine biologist, representative of the Association Calderones Grises – Alberto Sarabia Hierro and the activist Wim Geirnaerst, of Clean Ocean Project, – promoter along with other environmental groups of the demonstration against the expansion of the Port of Corralejo, on Sunday, May 30, at 12 noon, at the Muelle Chico, in the center of the fishing village. Everyone joins and encourages us to participate with a unanimous cry: Save the bay of Corralejo!

The song of "El Pescador" by the singer-songwriter and teacher, Tinín Martínez, sounds with an essential lyric to understand and love the bay of Corralejo; A verse that explains how the boats were arriving at the beach, in "an open cove in the soul draw", a unique place in the world. That is why this Sunday, April 30, from 12 to 13 hours, in the Muelle Chico of the fishing village, several environmental and sports groups, led by Clean Ocean Project, call a demonstration against the expansion of the port, a project that threatens to destroy this place, its nature and its waves.

We interviewed Alberto Sarabria.- Marine biologist and head of the Association of Pilot Whales, one of the cetaceans he has been studying for years since he finished his degree. The bay of Corralejo is a unique ecosystem for its biodiversity and geomorphology since the last eruption of the island's volcanoes, says the biologist. "We must paralyze this project at all costs," he adds, "because it can mean the end of a natural treasure, of incalculable values. You can't transform this spectacle of landscape and nature."

It also explains the behavior of these gray cetaceans, their feeding, and now it has been proven that it is also a birth zone; It is easy to observe mothers with young. "It is important to designate critical zones to preserve areas where these vital feeding and reproduction processes occur. It is essential to protect and conserve these spaces," he adds.

We must preserve this bay as it is, repeats the marine biologist, because the negative aspects such as noise, the increase in maritime traffic, have forced to rethink other infrastructures such as the port of Tenerife in Fonsalía. Cetaceans are species that depend on sound for the development of their lives, especially deep diving species such as the pilot whale, the tropical or sperm whales.

All these cetaceans are residents on the island and are part of the richness of the biodiversity of Fuerteventura. In addition, sperm whales and turtles are species that spend hours resting on the surface and the increase of ferries and other boats would have a serious impact on these endangered populations, because of collisions, as has happened elsewhere.

We interviewed Wim Geirnaert – Founder in 2001 of the association Clean Ocean Project, awarded several times by the Biosphere Reserve of Fuerteventura for his numerous actions to clean up plastics on the coast and his fight against oil platforms.

Considers it essential to save the bay and the life in it; also the economy linked to the waves, water sports and artisanal fishing of this place and that gave rise to the fishing village that is Corralejo.

The expansion of this dock is an obsolete and speculative development model, which would take its landscape ahead, being able to bathe on the beaches of the town, since the waters would stagnate. The work will entail a real torture for those who live and enjoy this place, they would break the attraction and with it only the builders will win. Currently there are three ferry lines are working perfectly, we can see that practically in a large part of the trips are empty. All that is needed is good management and renovation of the port facilities; There is no need for more shopping centers in the port, which there are already many in the village. That is why we hope that people join the demonstration so that they do not destroy this jewel with the island of Lobos in the background and the Dunes of Corralejo. We expect an aquatic event because people are going to bring their board to be in the water as well.

Final song .- We also finished with a song by Tinín Martínez, "A donde vas Fuerteventura".
