Don’t understand why Jet2, TUI etc can fly planes out in numbers but Ryanair has cancelled its three planes today. Yesterday they operated a normal schedule but today nothing at all from the Canaries.

Hopefully part of a larger plan .... ??? Maybe to keep passenger numbers in the airports below a certain level ??

Or maybe O’Leary is reverting to type ....

My best guess is to minimise the number of empty planes flown over and to free up planes for slots at other airports (Malaga, etc.) where demand will be higher. Why run three less-than-half-full rescue flights back when you can run just one full one?

To be fair to Ryanair and other carriers, they are not national enterprises who have government backing. This is exactly what TFL did with the tube (reduced the number of trains running because it was "less busy"), and they will absolutely be bailed out by the government if they have issues; a company like Ryanair will have to take its chances. They have to make whatever decisions will allow them to stay in business during and after this crisis.

I personally do NOT want to see Ryanair fail and go into bankruptcy as it will massively increase my flight prices in the coming years if there is less competition in the market. That said, god knows what will happen when the hotels close and there are still tourists left on the island wanting out.

Why haven't the EU / governments regulated that different airlines work together to repatriate passengers.

I have just heard from a neighbour that they have a friend sat on a Jet 2 plane on the tarmac with 90 empty seats and they are waiting to try and fill them so why are there other waiting / stranded passengers  not being transferred on to this plane by order of the government.

I have heard that they HAVE to run only half full to fulfill the "spacial requirements"

If true that is incredible as depending on destination I would have been on it. I have been monitoring the Jet2 website for days, either no seats at all or several hundred euros. Also know an employee on the island who is out of work once their last passenger is gone today.

I managed to get through to Ryanair this morning and was told all their flights to and from Spain grounded today in preparation for a big rescue effort this week. Just hope this information is true .....

If you're supposed to stay a metre away from everybody even half full is too much.
