Shearwater chicks learn to fly in October
#1
As every year at this time, the first island institution coordinates the campaign to protect this emblematic bird on the islands

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through the Ministry of the Environment, directed by Carlos Rodríguez, coordinates the campaign to protect the Cory's shearwater Calonectris borelais, which will take place between the months of October and November of this year.

The Environment Department of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura annually launches this campaign to protect the Cory's shearwater, a protected bird that is included in the List of Wild Species under Special Protection, in Annex I of the Birds Directive and in the Bern Convention.

Within the 2023 campaign, a total of 156 specimens of shearwaters were collected, of which 138 were recovered. 72% came from the municipality of La Oliva, 15% from Puerto del Rosario, 9% from Antigua and 2% from Tuineje.

The Cory's shearwater is a large seabird that can measure about 50 centimeters from head to tail. It lives in the open sea and only touches land to reproduce. Its beak is yellow with a black tip and prominent nostrils at the base of the beak. The colors of the feathers on the dorsal part are gray or brown and the ventral is white, with the edge of the feathers of the wings black.

Although shearwaters can be seen on the coasts of Fuerteventura from March, the months of October-November are the most critical, as the chicks leave their nests. On that first flight, which they make mainly at night, they are attracted to points of light, dazzling and thus deviating from their way to the sea. In this way, they can collide with buildings or other obstacles that they find in their path, being exposed to the action of predators. Although they have apparently not suffered injuries, they are not able to take flight on their own, requiring help.

The Minister of Environment and Hunting, Carlos Rodríguez, recalls that, for the protection and conservation of the species, collaboration and coordination between administrations and public bodies, associations, groups, tourist centers and citizens in general is essential.

In this way, a call is made to citizens to collaborate in this campaign, remembering that, if they find a specimen, they must always notify 112. It also urges the collaboration of city councils and hotel centers to contribute to this campaign by adopting lighting control measures, turning off those outdoor luminaires that do not affect safety or mitigating their intensity when this is not possible, especially those near the coast.

How to act

The Ministry of the Environment reminds that, even if it is observed that the bird is in good condition, it is necessary not to release the animal until it passes through veterinary control. First of all, the animal must be taken care of, picked up very carefully, especially with the beak. To do this, it is advisable to use a towel, sweatshirt or similar and, then, deposit the shearwater in a box with ventilation so that it can breathe and remove the object used. Subsequently, the box must be closed and the animal must be kept in a quiet place and in the shade, until the wildlife collection service passes.

It is important not to provide any type of solid or liquid food and to notify 112. For your convenience and if possible, you can deliver it to one of the following collection points: La Oliva Biological Station, Civil Guard, Local Police, Firefighters, Civil Protection, Red Cross and Cabildo insular de Fuerteventura.

It is important to provide the information of the place where it was found, during the call of the notice and also write it down in the same box. This information is really useful for later release and for statistical purposes. In the event of a dead shearwater, it is also important that they indicate the point where it is located, to detect possible areas of greater accidents and to be able to adopt preventive measures.

Carlos Rodríguez recalls that "it is essential to send this information, since the citizen response is truly useful for the conservation of this species and for the management of the collection and release of specimens of Cory's shearwater on their way to the sea".
