The El Charco power plant pits the Canary Islands Government against the Island Counc
#1
Everything points to the fact that the new 50 MW engines that will give light to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote due to the energy emergency will go to the old power plant in the capital

The Deputy Minister of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Energy, Julieta Schallenberg, said on Thursday that the Government of the Canary Islands has done "everything possible" for the dismantling of the Las Salinas thermal power plant (El Charco), in Fuerteventura, for its transfer.

It should be remembered that the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge is pending the tender of the 50 MW that will be installed on the island in several fuel engines as a result of the declaration of energy emergency in Fuerteventura.

It should also be remembered that in Lanzarote, an island with similar circumstances, the power will not be expanded, but it is understandable if we remember the "latest generation" submarine cable that makes a unique system of both islands. "They do not need engines as long as they are put in Puerto del Rosario," explain sources from the Cabildo.

At this point, the deputy minister of the Canarian government has insisted that her department has always shown a willingness to listen to citizens, so "all the steps" that have been possible have been taken to carry out the relocation that has been requested for years by the Buenos Aires society.

The Deputy Minister Schallenberg, in this regard, affirms that "there is not" an island plan that reflects alternatives to the Las Salinas plant, blaming the island authorities for the lack of planning.

The Cabildo refers to the PGO of Puerto del Rosario and 30,000 meters in Zurita

In this sense, the president of the Cabildo explained this morning that "the General Planning Plan of Puerto del Rosario, approved in 2017, already contemplates the new location in the Llanos Pelados-Zurita area, so this transfer can be made imminently by the competent administrations"

In this line, and contradicting the Majorero council, the deputy minister stresses "that this is something that has to be reflected in the island plan and, in addition, it has been proposed after the tender has begun".

"As far as possible we will always look for alternatives to El Charco, but we do not know what has been presented and investors do not have an island plan," continued the deputy minister, who added that they have been waiting for 20 years for island planning, "but there is no alternative location".

Because, Julieta Schallenberg continued, "it is not enough to say 'not here', you have to say where it is", and that, she reiterated, has to go in the territorial plan of the island.

Faced with this situation of confrontation between the Cabildo and the Ministry, President García has asked for the mediation of Fernando Clavijo to resolve the problem.
