Vueling condemned for fraud in the use of ticket subsidies.

The list of airlines convicted of fraudulent use of the subsidy in the prices of air tickets to residents of the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla continues to grow. Air Europa, which in December 2021 was sentenced by the Supreme Court to return 14 million euros to the State, is now joined by Vueling, Tourinews advances

A judgment of the High Court of Justice of Madrid, dated September 30, condemns the airline of the IAG group to pay 458,712.02 euros to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.

Where does the penalty come from?

In the settlement corresponding to May 2013, Vueling received a total of 2.6 million euros as a bonus for the trips of residents in the archipelagos and autonomous cities – it should be remembered that, at that time, the State covered 50% of the cost of the flights of these citizens (now 75%). A financial audit by the General Comptroller of the State Administration (IGAE) determined that there were irregularities in the sale and collection of Vueling tickets distributed by certain travel agencies.

After the analysis, the entity determined that 13.71% of the tickets issued in that month were irregular and urged the airline to return an amount of € 359,370.34, to which another € 99,341.68 for default interest can be added.

In July 2020, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation issued a resolution urging the airline to pay the 458,712.02 euros, however, the airline filed the contentious-administrative appeal to challenge the resolution. This request has now been denied, although an appeal may be lodged with the Supreme Court.
