Last night's electrical storm kept me and my dog awake until around 6am!
Canarias7:
1,400 lightning strikes over the Canary Islands in four hours.
From the Aemet they point out that the electrical device was expected to fall into the sea, but ended up affecting Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
Many Gran Canarians were surprised last night and during the early morning of this Wednesday by the thunderstorms that left lightning and rain on the island. All this, after the start of the week was marked by heat, which even led Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura to the yellow warning on Monday, with temperatures of up to 34 degrees.
The delegate of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the Canary Islands, David Suárez, points out that these storms were expected at sea, but ended up affecting, especially, the southeast and the capital of Gran Canaria. Early this morning there was also a discharge in Lanzarote, although most of the electrical device did impact the ocean.
The expert points out that the storms are associated with an area of instability, formed by an isolated depression at high levels (DANA), whose core is moving towards the northeast of the Canary Islands. It is expected, therefore, that next morning the DANA will be located northeast of the archipelago and will have no effect on it.
Currently two areas remain active that can leave discharges, one is in the northeast of Lanzarote and another south of the islands, off the coast of El Aaiún (Western Sahara). However, it is not expected that they will have an impact on the archipelago, but will affect, exclusively, aeronautical surveillance. "As the hours go by, it will subside," says Suárez.
Thunderstorms in data
The thunderstorms that fell in Gran Canaria last night and in the early hours of Monday left 6 liters of water in one square meter in the stations of Tejeda, Cruz de Tejeda and Tejeda Casco. As well as, between 5.4 and 6 liters in Valleseco and Teror, and between one and two in the south and northeast.
As for the rays recorded, the delegate of the Aemet in the Canary Islands provides the data available at the moment, which are 1,400 rays in the last four hours, in the area between Madeira and the south of the Canary Islands.
From the Aemet they point out that these storms derive from a convective situation, this is the ascent of both warm and humid air, which favors the formation of clouds that usually leave precipitation, lightning and thunder.
Drop in temperatures
On the other hand, the expert indicates that temperatures have fallen in the last 24 hours in a generalized way, especially in those localities where they had risen the most, such as the inland areas of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Tenerife.
He adds that in the coming days the Weather will stabilize again, recovering values (at the temperature level) more typical of this time of year. It is expected, however, cloudiness of evolution and diurnal warming, which causes the days to dawn clearer and, as the hours progress, tend to cloud.
