Let's be honest: it's almost impossible to determine to real figures and each country has his own protocols for counting something as a 'corona-victim' or not. In the Netherlands the official figures show that a labeled corona-death is almost always (but there are of course exceptions) a person with multiple other diseases. So it's quite hard to determine which illness is the cause of death. In some countries a corona death is only counted as a person has been tested positive, in other countries is a 'possibility' enough to be counted. In the Netherlands almost all deaths are age 65+, combined with other diseases. Total percentage of deaths (all included) in 2020 is lower than 2019 and 2018.

Let's hope op a preventive vaccine and working meds to available this year.

For countries which are dependent on tourism, Corona is a major economic disaster.

I applaud Fuerteventura for the measures taken: effective isolation of the immigrants, home isolation and recently the introduced insurance for travelers. Regarding the insurance: I can't find this on any holiday package website in NL yet. A shame, because it could help people to choose for a Canary holiday. So, some work left for the tourist office.

In contrast, just landed at Stansted a few minutes ago, masks seem optional for many and when I asked Border Force why they didn’t check my quarantine forms I was told they check 1 in 5. So don’t bother to fill one in and plead ignorance if you get stopped.

I want people to take their own responsibility: the rules are clear. Legally, wearing a mask is not an option, but (in certain circumstances) a duty. Enforcement and fines should be applicable, but are depending on capacity of Police/douane. So, sampling is a normal measure.

I'm required to fill in an electronicnic form at https://www.spth.gob.es/create and also twice (to and from) a dutch health form.
Hi John,
It does seem high but the info from the surveys seem legit & we all know that pretty much all countries have been under reporting. Paart of this was info from undertakers as well. Does make you think though 🤔🤔
More than 85% of the new cases of COVID-19 correspond to people under 30 years old infected during leisure time

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands reports that more than 85 percent of the new cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in the Canary Islands in the last week correspond to a profile of people under 30 years of age who have been infected during leisure or in family gatherings without maintaining security measures. Only in the last 24 hours, 85 cases have been detected, of which 59 have been detected in Gran Canaria, 20 in Tenerife, 2 in Fuerteventura and 4 in Lanzarote. Regarding the ages, in Gran Canaria 95 percent of the new cases have occurred in those under 30 years of age and in Tenerife this percentage drops to 85 percent.

In this sense, the Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo. appeals to everyone's responsibility because "we are not only risking the health of the most vulnerable people" but this type of behaviour can lead us to have to carry out "new confinements, which would generate serious economic problems." The counsellor insists that "these young people are putting the economic future of the entire Archipelago at risk" because "if businesses are closed, unemployment will skyrocket."

Trujillo appeals to the "spirit of solidarity and responsibility that our youth has shown to now take that step and comply and help enforce the rules." At the same time, the counsellor announces coordination with all local, regional and state administrations to "intensify control measures and sanctions for possible breaches, especially related to illegal leisure activities."

Blas Trujillo insists that "young people, for the most part, do not suffer the consequences of the disease but are vectors and transmitters of it to vulnerable groups." Despite the fact that the young sector is the most asymptomatic, "the positives force us to isolate a large part of people who, in turn, exhaust the health system with their follow-up and tracing". Cases are occurring in which a single party "has forced dozens of people to be tracked and their consequent isolation." In addition, the counsellor warns of the labour problems that are already being detected "because we are seeing how we have to indicate the quarantine to entire departments in companies with the associated problems that this entails."

The Ministry of Health reminds that, until there is a vaccine, the only method to avoid contagion is the physical distance of 1.5 meters between people; frequent hand washing and the use of masks, which in the Canary Islands is mandatory in all closed and open places, provided that the safety distance cannot be maintained. Experts recall that the main route of infection is physical contact, with an exposure of more than 15 minutes, between people.

Posted this so we all can stay safe (due to the info) and keep our distance, especially when it comes to large groups on the beach etc. Don't start any kind of hate discussion towards the Millennials nor GenZ, please.  Heart
High rate of positives for the under 30s age group in several countries.  I think that Governments need to use social media effectively to get the message across to this age group about how they need to behave.   It is the main way to influence them.
The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, announced this Thursday, August 13, after the extraordinary meeting of the Governing Council to analyze the evolution of the Coronavirus in the archipelago that is backing down and opting for the closure of nightlife, after one of the largest outbreaks that have occurred in the archipelago is related to it.

Torres has also announced, at a press conference, that meetings, both in homes and abroad, may not exceed 10 people, while finally the Canary Islands has chosen to impose the mandatory nature of the mask in all spaces, also in the exteriors where until now if social distancing was fulfilled it could be dispensed with.

Likewise, the Canary Islands joins Galicia and prohibits smoking in open spaces if the safety distance is not maintained.

Regarding nightlife, the Government of the Canary Islands has agreed to "reverse" the decree that regulated the opening when an increase in COVID-19 cases related to this activity was detected.

The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has indicated, after an extraordinary Governing Council, that this sector is once again regulated by the Decree of June 20, 2020, although at the moment there is a lot of uncertainty said decree states that:

1. Clubs and other nightlife establishments may only open open-air spaces to the public, for consumption sitting at the table.

2. In any case, the capacity in terraces will be 75 percent and interpersonal distance must be maintained or, failing that, the use of a mask.

3. Dance floors are not allowed.

Not a Coronavirus question as such so please feel free to move. Just wondering in view of current pandemic, Brexit etc if any benefits or even if it is possible to become more “Spanish”. Obviously property owners have an NIE number, but as part of possible future transition to applying for residency maybe ? Mention was made of a certificate (empadronamiento). I know the whole residency question has been addressed in other posts, it would be nice to be kind of resident but not quite if you follow. It might have advantages further down the line.
Hi Jason, I will answer you only briefly here, as your question should be posted on another thread (eg Residency), but I'm sure Sam will move it soon.

If you want to be in fuerteventura for more than 90 days in any 12 month period,  you need to apply for what is incorrectly called Residency. It used to be a certificate that you were a citizen of an EU country, but that recently changed to TIE with Brexit nearby.

You will find lots of information if you go to the topic paperwork.

The Empadron is when you register with the local council and you get on the electoral register (but you can only vote in local elections now, not European or National). It is often needed for many transactions and it can also qualify for the discounted travel to mainland Spain etc.

Again, search other topics and you will find information. Be aware that since my postings on both topics, you now need to do everything by prior appointment.

Tom.
Thanks Tom, just been reading the original thread.
