More than two tons of tropical pineapple, avocados and melons seized in Puerto del Rosario.
The Civil Guard seizes more than two tons of tropical fruit in an inspection carried out in a company in the sector.
The SEPRONA Patrol of Puerto del Rosario, the result of collaboration with another institution, proceeded on November 10, 2022 to carry out an inspection in a company, in which they seized more than two tons of various tropical fruit including pineapples, melons and avocados, which did not comply with phytosanitary regulations on importation, export and transit of vegetables and plant products in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario.
Knowledge of the facts
SEPRONA agents, in the exercise of their specific duties, became aware of routine inspections in collaboration with another institution, in which they immobilized the goods to a company dedicated to the distribution of plant products inside the establishment. The amount seized was a total of more than two tons of tropical fruit, specifically 2,117 kg, pineapples, melons and avocados. Therefore, as a result of the inspection within the facilities, the agents carry out the opening of the corresponding act due to the breach of the Order of March 12, 1.987, which establishes for the Canary Islands the phytosanitary rules relating to the import, export and transit of plants and plant products.
Likewise, from the seized tropical fruit it is broken down that the pineapples amount to a total of approximately 673 kg, arranged in 55 cardboard boxes with 6 units per box, making a total of 12 kilos and 627 kg prepared in 19 plastic boxes with 10 units per box, making a total of 19 kg, lacking labeling since they had previously been removed from Costa Rica.
On the other hand, an approximate amount of 728 kg of melons arranged in 52 cardboard boxes and with 5 units per compartment was also seized, making a total of approximately 14 kg each. This product was labeled by units and from Brazil.
The agents also seized an approximate amount of 89 kg of avocados without labeling related to the origin / traceability, distributed in 5 plastic boxes.
The fruit was in good condition and ready for distribution in different parts of the island of Fuerteventura and was stored inside the chambers of the inspected company.
The aforementioned Company was already denounced by SEPRONA in 2019 for the same facts, immobilizing on that occasion 1.5 tons of tropical pineapple.
These facts are qualified as serious or very serious fault to Law 43/2022, of November 20, on Plant Health in view of the circumstances that concur with a sanction ranging between 3,001 and 120,000 euros for serious ones, and from 120,001 to 3,000,000 euros for the very serious sanction, as well as the loss of the merchandise subject to immobilization.
For these facts, an official complaint and seizure report are sent to the Plant Health Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands.
