We are on our way to the island and have just driven from Bilbao to Salamanca and see that diesel is now more expensive than petrol, is the same on Fuerteventura or is it just the mainland?

It's all of Europe now isn't it? There is a widespread shortage. It'll only get worse come February when the EU bans all oil products from Russia.

If it is the oil shortage surely petrol would have gone up as well, in the UK diesel shot up last week whilst petrol stayed much the same.
Diesel in the UK for a number of years has been more highly taxed than petrol making it more expensive however in Spain up until recently diesel was cheaper than petrol as can be seen on the last photo I posted. It could of course be down to shortage of diesel production?

It's not so much an oil shortage but an actual diesel shortage. The EU refineries can't make enough so they import . But if they can't/won't import from Russia then things get tight.

Sam and Tom just check your receipts I got 25c discount on diesel when I filled up on arrival 24/10. I also got that 25c discount on the mainland. On an aside what I couldn't get my head round was the price difference before the discount between the mainland and here, 2.169 on the mainland and 1.679 here for premium diesel.

The Spanish government removed the 20c/Ltr subsidy at the stroke of midnight on the 31st December. They are still providing financial support for the cost of living, but in other ways, eg the threshold for financial support to families has increased substantially and there is now free bus travel for most residents.
If you arrived 24/10, the subsidy was still operating, but not in 2023. I'm not sure about diesel. Tom.

Thanks Tom, yes the subsidy on diesel has also gone.
By the way Repsol were giving further 0.10€ so you got 0.25€ discount, they are continuing with the 0.10€ discount if you have and use their Waylet app.
