New Rental Aid program announced by the Canary Islands Government

The Ministry of Public Works and Housing for the Canary Islands Government has launched a new rental assistance program for the 2024-2025 period, with a budget allocation of 16,325,088 euros. This initiative aims to support anyone with limited financial resources across the islands, and young people seeking housing in smaller municipalities.

The program, financed by both the State and the Regional Government offers two main lines of subsidies:

- For people with limited financial resources.

- For young people up to 35 years old living in smaller municipalities.

The funding breakdown is as follows:

- State funding: 12,557,760 euros for 2024 and 2025 under the State Plan.

- Canary Islands Government funding: 3,767,328 euros for the same period.

OBJECTIVES AND COVERAGE:
The primary goal of the program is to facilitate access to housing by providing direct rental subsidies. The assistance can cover up to 50% of the monthly rent or the use of a residence or room designated as the primary and permanent home.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
To qualify for the rental assistance, applicants must meet the following conditions:

- Residency and Age: Must be an adult and a resident of Spain.

- Income: Annual income for 2023 must not exceed 21,600 euros or three times the Public Indicator of Multiple Effects Income (IPREM), which is 7,200 euros.

- In specific circumstances, the limit can be up to four times the IPREM for general category large families and people with disabilities.

- For special category large families and people with a recognised disability of 33% or higher, the limit can be up to five times the IPREM.

- Rental Contract: Applicants must have a rental contract for a residence in the Canary Islands.

- Residency Requirement: Applicants must be registered at the local Town Hall (empadronados) at the address for which they are seeking assistance.

RENT LIMITS:
- The general rent limit is 600 euros per month.

- In specific municipalities, the limit is increased to 900 euros per month. These municipalities include Adeje, Arico, Arona, Candelaria, El Rosario, San Bartolomé, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Granadilla de Abona, Guía de Isora, Güímar, Mogán, La Laguna, San Miguel de Abona, Santa Brígida, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Santiago del Teide, La Oliva, Tazacorte, Pájara, Teguise, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Tías, Puerto de la Cruz, and Yaiza.

- For families with a large number of members or those with disabilities, the limit is set at 900 euros monthly.

- For room rentals, the general limit is 300 euros per month, which rises to 450 euros in the aforementioned municipalities.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
Applications can be submitted from today (2nd August) until Friday 30th August either in person at the Canary Housing Institute or online through the Canary Islands Government's electronic headquarters. For residents of La Palma, the deadline is extended to September 2nd.
